frame question... put up or shut up

Ok here we go.... I am working on my 68 burb. I bagged it a couple of months ago pulled it out of the garage... it was not low enough. So back into the garage, call nate for the rear and start to do a little trimming and stuff up front for another inch or two up front. Here is the question... do I pull the frame out from under this thing and clean and detail it all up while its on jack stands and torn apart? My worries is the snow ball effect... it has already started to happen but I think I can nip it in the bud now.
What would you do? Rear end is out, ta crossmember, tranny crossmember. The truck is or shall I say was a driving big block burb.
HELP!!!

Re: frame question... put up or shut up

What are your plans when you are done? Is it going to be a driver, cruiser, or just a weekend toy? If your going to do a lot of driving and not much cleaning, I would strip what you can, blast it clean and paint it as best as possible.

If your going to cruise and show it, then you may want to take it a bit further.

Re: frame question... put up or shut up

It will be a cruiser, family ride toy. My worry is to pull the frame, out comes the engine tranny and the front clip. Then I know I will start doing other stuff like the new wire harnest, firewall kit that I got from Nate.... I just dont want to turn it into a 1 year long project.... but I want it to look good.

Re: frame question... put up or shut up

i would do it now if i were you. i keep itching it do it now instead of "later when i tear it down"...because then i wont have to later. lol

thats what i keep telling myself but i really want to get it on the road and enjoy it some before parking it again...so i guess its your call. maybe just paint some por 15 on it. it will still look nice and wont take too much time to do it. that way you dont pull everything out, you can just do it all together.

Re: frame question... put up or shut up

lol, i know man. i do have a feeling if you paint it that motor is coming out lol

this is what i tell myself...get it done, get it on the road and enjoy it, then when i have more room, tear it down and go all the way. its a tough decision, and i have a good feeling later when its time when i want to tear it down, something will keep me from doing it lol

Re: frame question... put up or shut up

I was just gonna do a paint job on mine, now its a complete frame off restoration project. Its a difficult choice, once you see what things look like under the truck its hard just to forget it and move on.

My two cents-
If your gonna keep it for a long time- do everything now. If you plan to sell in the future- just do the drop.

What ever you decide- put up some pics!!!

Thanks Nathan porter. LOL will i be sorry in the end, i dought it, truck is coming out great but it takes time, lots of time. You need to decide are you willing to give up all that time for looks? Most of witch is under the truck. either way i hope you end up happy and enjoy the truck, good luck.

I try to keep mine on the road as much as possible. I feel more inspired to work on it when I can enjoy driving it, so I keep the downtime to a minimum.

Re: frame question... put up or shut up

keep it as a driver. i took mine down to the bare frame because i had to. you will find that if you start to make it really nice that every part counts. i am now replacing every bolt so they all match. it is a very expensive and time consuming process. scuff and paint that thing so you can get it rollin. i kinda like what a forum member on here did, his handl is dino. he has three or four dropmember trucks, they are not show quality, but damn nice drivers. he rolls them everyday.

The guys who have the biggest smiles are the ones who can actually DRIVE their trucks, just ask all the daily driven truck guys.

Re: frame question... put up or shut up

have you thought about undercoating?
a quick clean up and scuff down... then some nice black undercoat to freshen it all up.
would go quick with about a dozen cans of the good stuff!
or go undercoating on the rails, floor, then clean and gloss spray the stuff you are taking out? (like the xmember, rear end, etc...)
**
would look clean for a daily and give you some satisfaction that it aint
barnyard under there!
my 2 centavos, anyway...

sometimes the last four bolts are a mistake. Then the snowball starts, and it never sees the road again. Want proof, check E-Bay and CL, how many unfinished projects go cheep?

Re: frame question... put up or shut up

Get yourself another "project". Have one that's a driver, and then take your time on the other one. This way you can have the best of both worlds. (I know this isn't always practical).

Whatever you decide, the most important part of any build/project is the "PLAN". Make a solid plan and stick to it. Once you break your discipline and sway from the original plan, you will always allow yourself to be swayed by emotion.

If you are going to keep the burb "forever" then do it now. But beware... !

Re: frame question... put up or shut up

Wow, does this all sound familar... My "6 month" just swap in some suspension parts and disc brakes has turned into an almost 2 year body off frame project and still has a while to go.

I ended up going out and buying a '65 C10 driver so I can enjoy cruises/shows while I get the '68 built. Now all my time is going to driving the '65 and the '68 ain't gettin' no lovin'.

Do snowball the 'burb unless you have something else as a classic driver.

Or, you can be like me and own the truck for 20+ years and wish you would have done this or done that when you had a chance.

I havent done a body off on mine, a couple body on's yes. I would like to do the body off but I am also afraid of what I might find. I cant just leave it ya know?

Re: frame question... put up or shut up

Well it's going to stay on it's frame. I got all my parts in and have started back on my original plan. If all goes to plan in a month she will be rolling. I'm working on it this weekend so I'll have some pics to post.

Thanks to all for talking me off the ledge.... I did a frame off on my Nova but I've got kids now so it's a little different this time. Ok enough typing time for work!! Be blessed.
