Angry Horn Help (honk honk)

Alright, I know someone on here can help me. When I bought my truck a couple weeks ago it had a crappy looking (POS) aftermarket steering wheel on it and the horn was not hooked up. This weekend I installed a new billet wheel with a grant GMC horn button on it and followed the directions hooking it up. I noticed when I touched the horn wire to something metal it made a clicking noise under the dash or maybe on the firewall. I thought it would have made the horn honk instead. After completing the install, that was the most I could get it to do when pushing the horn button or it would do nothing at all. I am guessing the horn relay is bad! Question is, where the heck it it located and how can I test it (by-pass) to see if that is the problem? Or maybe someone else has another idea as to what the problem is?!

Thanks for all the help in advance

Re: Horn Help (honk honk)

I think the horn relay is on the firewall by the wire block. It is on my truck.

Re: Horn Help (honk honk)

Check the horn with a test light and have someone click the button, you may have a bad horn, if the relay is clicking that means the circuit is working from the horn button and the contacts are engaging. Now there could be a problem with the relay, but I have never had to replace one yet. If you get a light at the horn with the test light, bad horn or horn ground. There are only three wires at the relay, red, green, black, red should be hot, green goes to the horn, black comes from the horn button, you can cross the red and green and the horn should go off, but make sure the horn has a good ground too.

Mine did the same thing and I had a bad horn. The old test light will tell you in a sec if the horn is bad. Good luck

Re: Horn Help (honk honk)

take horn off clean the mounting spot real good that is your ground// liberally spray WD40 inside the horn to breakfree and lubricate the diaphram many times that is all that is required tto save a horn// by doing it a few times the diaphram polishes the plate and its back blowin like normal

Yeah, make sure you have a good ground at the horn. I was having the same problem and it was the ground.

Do yourself a favor and find a way to muffle the horn (stuffed rag) while you're playing around with it. They're designed to be annoying. Your ears and neighbors will thank you for it.

Re: Horn Help (honk honk)

Thanks for all the help guys!

I tried it all and concluded that my horns are bad since I am getting power to them. Tried cleaning the ground, drowning them with WD-40 and letting them soak it up and... NO LUCK!

Next step is to replace them, I am thinking Cadillac horns or maybe air horns of some sort. Any thoughts?

Re: Horn Help (honk honk)

This forum has been great, I am having the same issue with my 71 truck. I am getting the clicking sound at the horn relay, just need to investigate the horn now.

Re: Horn Help (honk honk)

I added a set of train horns to the 72, with onboard air compressor and 5 gal tank. Best horn upgrade I ever did. While not on the cheaper side meaning the wife wasn't happy, she is even happy with the results and keeps hinting she wants a set for her sequoia.
