Pulling motor/trans
What's the easiest way to pull them out? I've got a cherry picker. Pull them out at the same time or pull the motor then drop the trany?

You have to get the engine AND tranny high enough to clear the core support. Most cherry pickers won't lift one that high, plus you're talking about something over 1000lbs. Pull the 6 tranny bolts and unbolt the torque converter, use a floor jack or blocks to support the tranny, then lift the engine squarely out. Jack the truck up under the front crossmember and you'll get enough ground clearance to slide the tranny out. |

It depends on what level of tear down you want to do. It is not hard to pull the radiator and core support to pull the engine and trans right out of the front.

Yeah, and it gives you the chance to wash your floor or driveway with tranny fluid
 The times I really think twice about this is with the 90's engines. The sonsab!tches at GM decided we needed pinch nuts on the studs that bolt the engine and tranny together, and while we're at it, we'll do it to all 6, those are some of the worst cramped positions and S L O W, regardless of how you wrench it. I just find it a lot easier when those are stock type bolts to unbolt everything, it lets me keep my tranny fluid where it belongs and I get to lift the engine straight up and out. I understand there are tools that allow you to grab the flexplate and turn it a good bit at at time, but I do my penance for the job by using my big screwdriver. |

Considering he is going from a 305 to a 400 I was thinking he may need extra room when he puts everything back in

got everything off the motor (lines,hoses,wires,exc) core support is staying and so is the radiator.

i have pulled them clear over the radiator support with motor and trans many...many..many times before....but my truck have always been pretty low.
