Rear wheel cylinder problems

Ok heres the scoop.....I have the narrower rear end of the 67-72 trucks and am trying to replace the rear brakes, basically everything from the backing plate the the drum, so I got all the parts finally today and the wheel cylinders don't fit the one's off the truck are narrower than the replacements and the parts store only shows what they sold me for all rear coil spring trucks. So my biggest problem is what can I do or where can I go from here? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Rear wheel cylinder problems

I replaced mine when I reworked the brakes last year, and didn't have any issues.

Which parts store? I went to O'Reilly and they fit direction in the location.

Gotta ask... are they on the right side? IIRC the fittings went one way and one way only.

I'll see if I can come up with a part number for you.

These are what advanced says is the only one's for coil spring 1/2 tons.

They didn't make a 12 bolt 3/4 ton did they? Other wise I see no option for any other rear wheel cylinders no matter what year the rear end is.

Re: Rear wheel cylinder problems

Is the "nozzle" angled or straight?

They might have given you front cylinders (angled) instead of rears (straight).

Re: Rear wheel cylinder problems

Are the bodies of the wheel cylinders wider or are the tits wider when they are mounted in the wheel cylinder. If the tits are wider you can squeez them in quite a bit but do it before you hook up the brake lines. They might be a little haard to squeez together but they will go.

Re: Rear wheel cylinder problems

Huh... well unless they gave you the wrong ones, I would consider checking with another parts store and see how they match up.

Was the truck stock? Could the rearend have been changed at some point in its life?

Re: Rear wheel cylinder problems

i just did a complete rebuild of my rear brakes and my new wheel cylinders didnt wanna fit into the backing plate either, they came from o'reilly. i just did a slight grind on them until they fit- seems like i had to use different mounting bolts as well

Re: Rear wheel cylinder problems

The actual body of the wheel cylinder is wider on the new one's. There are 2 ears on the backing plate that the cylinder sits on and the old one fits great the new ones rubber ends are being push in by those ears. Possible may have to grind the ears down/off tonight we'll see what happens.

Re: Rear wheel cylinder problems

i'd clean the old ones up and take them into a good autoparts store like NAPA to have them get me the proper ones

Re: Rear wheel cylinder problems

we just did this on my son's '67 without issue as well. you do have to squeeze the new ones pretty good to get them to seat between the tabs so they will mount correctly though. let us know the outcome.

Re: Rear wheel cylinder problems

I used to run imto this often when I did a lot of brake work. I just cut the safety brackets on the backing plate back a little.

Re: Rear wheel cylinder problems

They do make different bore sizes. Sometimes if you take the dust shield off the cups inside have the bore size molded on them. I would compare the bore sizes of the two. Good luck.

Re: Rear wheel cylinder problems

Everyone I've looked at for these monsters says they only offer 1 and the new one's are about 1/2" wider than what came off the rear so I guess we will be trimming those safety hooks down a tad.
