'68 5.3L Build

Well here is some pics of what I did today.

Here is the dirty heads and under the intake.

Here is painted valve covers and under the intake plate

Here is the Edelbrock intake and Carb

Here is the Edelbrock coil covers

But what the heck is this?

It goes under the intake. Do I still need it?

Now that the warmer weather is here. I just rolled out the frame and cab.

Here is the floor being cut and prepped for the new floor.
It will be sand blasted this week.

I believe this is the steam vent and I believe it is very necessary. It needs to run to a high point in the cooling system.

that steam line looks bigger then what I have. On mice the rear ports are sealed...only the front ports go to the steam vents.

I believe the truck engines block off the rear ports and the car engines use all 4 ports?

I was reading over your links.

It looks like the accessory brackets can interchange between the truck and the car Gen III motors.

I like the GTO brackets with the alt down low and the power steering pump up high. Because the alt bracket is in the way of my coil cover. Will this work or is the another bracket system that is NOT in the way like the truck bracket is?

I had thought I had read the car engines had 4? My 2005 5.3 from a suburban only has the front 2? Maybe it is a year thing?

i think around 01 or 02 they just used the front 2 steam ports, and blocked off the rears, but like eveyone says, you need to keep it

Re: '68 5.3L Build

Well I guess I will get the steam line, scrub it down and paint it before putting it back on.

I should be getting my ceramic headers this week and my trans crossmember.

Re: '68 5.3L Build

I got my new ceramic headers today!

So can someone tell me what this is for on the passenger side of the header.
Do I still need to hook it up? It has a block off plate that came with it.

Here it is on the old headers.

Re: '68 5.3L Build

If you change accessories you have to change the crank pulley too, they all have different spacing. I managed to piece together LS1 accessories for about $200 but I got lucky. They can get pricey. Are you running power steering too? If not there are some good home-brew alternator only set-ups with the truck stuff on ls1tech.com.

That's for the EGR tube to hook to, you don't need it unless you're going full emmissions on your swap, which most people from Missouri don't do. You can just block it off.

Re: '68 5.3L Build

Look'n good with the swap. With reguards to the accessory drive, quoting for ls1tech, "The thing to keep in mind is that the truck/F-body/Corvette all use different accessory spacing in regards to the distance from the pulley to the block, the trucks stick out the furthest, the F-body is in about 5/8 from that and the vette is in a little more. The total difference between all three is around an inch I believe, but it is enough to make obvious bracket issues if trying to mix and match parts" http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/conver...de-1500-a.html

Re: '68 5.3L Build

Nothing wrong with the 68 LWB
I was going to just swap cabs.
The 69 was a SWB frame.

But, they both needed just as much work done on them.
I figured I could get more out of the 68 if I kept it complete.
I didn't think I should put a 68 cab with 69 front or a 69 cab with a 68 front.

As far as the LS, it is going on the 69.
Also I will return it to EFI and not do the carb.

Re: '68 5.3L Build

alot of people prefer the 67-68 front clip. So in theory I would think that wold make it more valuable. Many don't mind having a frankenstein truk as long as it has a good vin and title. Either way it's your truck build it how you want.

Its funny that you say that. I do prefer the 67-68.
I ask on this forum before, and its seemed like a toss up which others preferred.

Oh well, I like them all.
