how do i tell a 1/2 ton from a 3/4 ton 52 gmc pickup

i,m going to possibly look at and possibly buy a 52 gmc pickup.he says its a 1/2 ton.how do i verify.by the lugs?it has been restored awhile back and has a a camaro motor and suspension.4 speed auto.he wants $5800.is it worth it.please help.

Here is a link to page that has frame info. Look in the table for frame side rail material thickness. Take some calipers or a mic and measure it. If it had the original axles, 1/2 ton would have 6 lug 3/4 up 8 until you got to the big truck which are obviously much larger.

It is worth $5800 only if you like what the PO built. You might choose to put $5800 into a truck and end up with a very different result. Stock trucks are fairly easy to price. Modified ones are highly personal.

I would suggest you get someone that knows the correct way to clip these trucks to look at it. If it wasn't done right, then the value is much less than 5800. Maybe someone on the board here is close to where you are at in CA and could help... In the mean time, take a look at the build threads with the camaro clip to see what good jobs look like.

thanks to all for the good info.its a long bed.a bit of bondo.does have a camaro front clip.too rough for me.even at $4500 i got him down to.
