Tailgate Problems

I recently got a new aftermarket tailgate for my 68' GMC and the tailgate i ordered sits flush on the right side, but is about 3/4 inch from closing on the left hand side. Has anyone else had a similar problem, and what kind of a fix is there for this?

Thanks,

Taylor

Re: Tailgate Problems

I bought a new aftermarket tailgate, LMC, and it fit the same way. I uninstalled/ installed a dozen times w/o much difference. I eventually got tired and frustrated and just slammed and kicked it shut. A year or so later it is OK. It can be a little difficult to open sometimes, I have to give it a good tug.

I'm sure this isn't what you want to hear, but this is what I did.

Re: Tailgate Problems

Have you put a straight edge across the top and bottom of the tailgate to make sure it's not twisted? If it's straight, likely your bed is not square.

If the tailgate is twisted, you could put 4x4 blocks on three corners, have someone hold down the opposite corner from the side that is not right and then push or pull the corner that is out of alignment.

Re: Tailgate Problems

What brand is it? Pictures? I would talk to who you purchased it from and see if this is a problem that has cropped up on the tailgates. If I get your discription right is sounds slightly twisted. WES

Re: Tailgate Problems

Would love to hear the outcome, I also purchased a tailgate last spring and same issue. Have not tackled fixing the problem yet, been to busy with everything else on the old truck.

Re: Tailgate Problems

Thanks for the responses guys, I believe the tailgate is twisted. The problem is the guy i bought the truck from didn't have the tailgate on but had it painted before mocking it up to see if it would fit right. The bed is square so i'm sure it is the tailgate. I'll try and post some pictures when i get off work later.

Thanks again!

Re: Tailgate Problems

Does anyone know the best company to order a new tailgate from? That won't come twisted? I finally killed the old one trying to fix the twist, I believe it was from LMC.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Tailgate Problems

If you buy parts from LMC, and the parts are screwed up. Tell LMC you want your money back, and tell them to pay the freight.
