C20 rear brake pads

Hello,

72 Suburban C20 at the shop right now to fix differential leak in/around the brake drum. My mechanic says there are two different brake pads for this axle - depending on the drum - one set is still available and one isn't. In the photo below, anyone see anything unusual about this drum (beyond it's covered in oil)? The drum itself is stamped : May Dia 11.24 - 3998512 - W-3

I suppose the question is - would any commonly available brake pad set fit this (available from LMC etc.)? Before he opens this up he'd like to have the parts on hand.

what rear axle do you have? i was able to get the pads from advance, i believe (raybestos) for my 69 c25 with dana 60. it's the crappy drums that were so hard to find ($120 each). should've just converted to disc. ha

Have never experienced difficulty getting new pads for the 3/4 and 1 ton rears, Eaton or the others. Yes, probably are two (or more) sizes of drums/pads depending on mfr. and year but seems odd that the shop cannot locate replacements. Your leak is almost surely the shaft seal (big one) that sits in the opening of the drum and the dissassembly is not all that difficult or time consuming, and then you can see exactly which pads you need. The seal may be harder to locate than the pads. He may not want to tie up shop space with the axle out while he goes on the search he may think he will have to do. Bummer. If you have space, take it home and do it yourself - guys on her will walk you through the job. Good luck. CCCC

There are 2 widths both 11", and last time I checked they were both avail through LMC...but i do know 1 is much less common ...probably earlier models with the all ball bearing Eaton.

Take note the more common size is exactly the same as thousands of later model 3/4 ton rears axles the interchangeability is vast ....brake shoes tend to be very generic and they don't change the configuration very often its just everything else around them.

Looks like from the pic that u have a Eaton HO72...same as my 1 ton except i have the 13 inch brakes which are the same shoes as all 14 bolt corporate.

If you have a '72 you should be fine 11 inch brakes for 73-87 are the same for that matter even the front brakes on early trucks 11 inch are also the same....

the only way to honestly tell what brake shoes are in there (pads are for disks) would be to open it up.
There were more than 2 part numbers.
That looks to be the HE52... not HO72. The 72 was only in one tons.

Fact; HO72 and HO52 are very similar, BOTH came in 3/4 ton trucks, the only real differences are the diff carrier, pinion, and its bearing , HO72 has a load bolt which rubs against the ring gear under high load conditions and can easily be seen on the third member as a large bolt/w a lock down nut. this load bolt increases the axle load capacity.

Externally they look nearly identical ..you need to look for the load bolt on the side of the third member ......I've owned two 3/4 ton's one '68 and one '72 and my current '68 1 ton. The '72 3/4 ton had a HO52 and the '68 3/4 ton had the HO72. My '68 1 ton has the same exact third member as the '68 3/4 ton ....HO72..(load bolt). It does have a narrower housing and larger brakes being a dually.

There is another Eaton: HO110 which can be identified by no diff cover, 10 lug wheels and has much larger dimensions. A few 1 ton's came with this diff.


Also checked '63-'70 all 3/4 ton trucks had exactly (2) sizes of brake shoes period, these are the same part for both front and rear, 71-72 rear only....12 x 2 1/2 or 11 5/32 x 2 3/4. If you see different part numbers it has to do with standard or premium shoes. 1 ton's used 13" brakes exclusively.

as long as the metal shoes are in good servicable condition they can b relined by a company specializing in brake relining

Actually, never did the job yet - ran out of money - got money - bought parts (drums and shoes, figure I'll return if the wrong size) - temperatures dropped to low 30s - snowed - and they salted the roads (so now the burb is in "storage," i.e. my driveway with a car cover on it) - so now I'm waiting a bit (probably Spring now) to get back into it all. I will post again when I open it up.

We've been in the 40's, but being over 45 years old, it still hurts.

I just bought my 66 in Nov, so I'm still anxious to work on it, and so I'll endure the cold.

I have the same rear end the eaton ho52 and I had no issues getting the pads either size from autozone. they were only like $19 for one size and $14 for the other size. i picked up both for the simple fact that one size is the same as my front brakes and the other may or may not fit if it dont i cann return them. just my .02.

here are the auto zone part numbers for duralast pads. the 11 and 5/32 are the front and it may or may not fit the rear as well depending on what size your rear drums are.
