8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

Just want to make sure of something. the 8-400 badge came out in 71 for the big block trucks even though they were infact 402ci, and, eventhough the '70 trucks were 402's, they still got the 8-396 badge correct?

And, the small block 400 was never offered in the pre-'73 trucks, true?

I ask because I might buy this truck below (for the motor and tranny, and onl y if I can get it cheaper) and can't quite make out the size of the motor in the pic, and I think it is a '72, not a '70:

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

That is a 72 big block. (402) In 1970 they were badged as 400 thru 72.
And you are correct the 400 small block wasn't offered in these trucks. That looks like a good buy. Better hurry, won't last long.

These trucks are funny. The spid sheet in the glove box sometimes say they are 396. The badge says 400, yet they are a 402. Funnier yet is they barely put out over 300HP! Good news is they respond very well to larger cam's and can actually perform a bit when coaxed. You've found somewhat of a rare truck, I'd buy it if it runs.

Cool, good to know. You have a bunch of parts too, or just some carcasses left? I'm in the market for a few things...

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

So, if the guy doesn't have a key for it, how am i to get it running? bridge a wire from the battery to the starter? then likewise, how do i get it to stop running? block the carb?

Or is there an easier way?

You could use a screwdriver and bridge the connections at the starter to see if it will start, or if you prefer simplicity, replace the ignition switch cylinder. Then you will have the keys

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

I'm new around here, but I'm pretty sure that the screw in the upper part of the door, just below the vent window handle tells you it's a 72. Obviously, that's assuming it's all original, but it's a start. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that one...

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

I'm thinking about it. I'm trying to figure out what to do about the title, or just switch cabs. Just have to make the 5-6 hour road trip.

If you are just going to use it for parts I'd just take a screwdriver and knock the ignition out and start it like tht I think it would work I drove my 85 3/4 ton and my 78 elcamino with a screwdriver for a key for a while

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

If you only want to see if the engine will start, run a wire from the battery (+) to the ignition coil (+). Then jump the starter solenoid (bat to S terminal) with a heavy screwdriver. If you want to do it "nice", clip a remote starter switch onto the solenoid instead of using a screwdriver. Don't run the engine for very long like this if the distributor still has points, because they will burn very quickly.

If the distributor has points and you want to run the engine for an extended length of time, connect an external coil resistor in series with the battery to coil wire.

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

Well friends, I got it

I didn't get it started because it has points and I didn't want to fry them, so I took a leap. The oil wasn't too dirty, and the trans fluid was clean as can be. The tilt wheel is tight, all the AC components are present except the compressor it seems, and the frame doesn't look NEARLY as bad as the body.

The cab and bed are pretty rotten, and the old turbines (9.5x16.5) are 'ok' but the tires are shot/missing It also has all the camper stuff on it still (wiring, tie-down posts, etc.)

It isn't as nice as I had hoped, but I am going to see what I can do to improve that. I am going to clean it tip to tail and get it running. then i will decide if I want to re-sell, or part it, or put the body of my 71 on this frame/drivetrain.

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

The '70 c-20 was ok, probably the same level as this truck, and I didn't look to closely at the '64's, except the c-20 dually looked like it was a 67-72 coil rear frame with a dually HO72 rear axle, no box.

This guy is retired and gets 2 to 10 cars daily from people that are running estates or want to clear up the clutter on their farmstead. he generally just scraps them @ about $175 a ton unless they are unique/in better shape than normal.

Funny thing...i had just loaded the truck up on the trailer and parked it on the service road next to the freeway to then settle up with the seller, and some dude pulled off the freeway and stopped by my truck. he then went on to say that he saw the truck loaded up and had to stop because he has a '67 small window short box sitting at his place that he wants sold. We exchanged contact info and I said I would post some pics here for him if he'd like. we'll see if he emails me... These trucks are waiting for us obsessive bastards all over the place
