air filter question

what air filter do you have? i bought a k&n air filter today, i told the parts guy what truck i had and he brings out this 4 inch filter.
i told him that ist way to tall. he told me, well then you have a 2 barrel car, or someone has messed with your truck. i laughed, and asked to see the 2 bbl one.

that one was the correct size. then i started thinking that i have never seen a truck with the thick airfilter. have you all, or wtf is going on?

i guess its more like 3 inches or so on the normal size
the big one is like 5

Dave, you shouldnt smoke so much crack! (couldnt pass that up)..........To be totally honest, I dont remember what the stock filter looks like I have a 14x4 K&N in a Moroso "wrap".....crazyL

im not sure what the mesurement is, but this is a photo of what i call a normal stock air filter. the one he handed me was almost double the hight.

All of the 67-72 trucks I have seen have something like a 2 1/2" filter, maybe even 2". The bigger ones were usually on trucks in the '80s. My 402 and both of the 350 that had factory air cleaners were same.

I use a 2 inch K&N with a chrome top for driving around and for shows I put the original setup back on. I notice a HUGE difference between the two while driving.

I have the stock one as shown in the picture on my 350 then I guy gave me a K&N with Chrome breather but I have never putten it on. My concern has been from people saying that dirt can get in easier with the K&N.... not good for a guy on gravel such as myself. A buddy of mine with a 87, 1 ton, 4wd, with 454 says it has made a difference in his performance by far and he gets another MPG, maybe two.

That black frisbee with the straw attached (original airbox) is what was on my BB when I got it from my grandfather.

The engine would completely cutout at about 3500 rpm due to air starvation.

I replaced it with a plain 3" paper filter on an open chrome plated body and WOW what a difference in power and mpg (must be the chrome).

The only think I don't like about it is the constant hiss of air through the Q-Jet...love that howl from the secondaries though.

The airbox was on the 350 that originally sat in my '72.

anyone ever turn the metal top upside down? i used to do that with my old truck.. dont know if it gave more power..

To everyone with the stock nozzle:

Think about the simple physics of your engine,

mass flow rate in must equal mass flow rate out.

The cross sectional AREA of your air intake should be somewhat equal to the area of your exhaust (fuel mass is negligible).

Those factory nozzles are way too restrictive and were the result of strict emission controls, not performance engineering.

UNMASK THOSE CARBS!

they show 2.
E-1500 4bbl
e-1450 2 bbl

they one they have as a 2 bbl fits in my stock 4 bbl air cleaner...something is up here

here is the thick one that i have never seen on our trucks...

Hey mtdave2that last filter you posted looks like the one for my dad's 84 chevy with a 4 bbl. His is almost 5 in tall..

....let's see. Someone gave you a K&N and the housing, but you don't know how well it filters and you drive on a gravel road? Have you been living in a tent?

K&N's have an oil-impregnated cotton gauze filter media that they warrant for 1million miles. The service interval is 50K miles. So, what is the question? These filters are designed to provide superior filtration, compared to oil bath, and pleated paper filters. Oil bath filters did the same thing, but had a coarser filter media, were heavy and cumbersome and had to be serviced periodically to keep the media properly oiled. Paper filters were an "improvement" due to the serviceability issues, and they were lighter in weight.

Seems us who were interested in performance didn't like the paper filters, tho. So, the K&N was born. Now, Accel has a clone, as does Summit Racing. I run K&N's on everything except my old Yahama Moto-4, but I'm looking for one for it.

They aren't concours correct, but neither is my truck.

Back in high school, in the mid 80's, gulp, a buddy and I both had Chevelles. We would did the metal top upside down thing. It sounds really cool when your tranny kicks down a gear.

Wish someone would give me one!I am running an accel.It seems to work as good as my k&n.The only reason I went with the accel is because it matches my paint,black and yellow.

I just replaced my filter. I have an aftermarket (cheap) chrome air cleaner. The filter I replaced was about 2" tall. I measured the diameter of the bottom lid and went to the parts store to find the tallest filter that would fit under the hood. (More air flow is NOT a bad thing). I ended up with a 4" tall filter. I flipped the top lid upside down because the carb stud wasn't long enough the "right side up" way. Just my 2 cents.

I believe that K&N offer two types of extra wrap around pre-filter for off road driving that filters out the bigger particles and gives you some added protection. Try here for further info. http://www.knfilters.com/wraps.htm haven't had the need to use them myself but there may be board members out there who have.

You can buy a two foot length of the threaded rod for your carb at Home Depot or Lowe's for about a buck or two (its a standard size National Coarse).

Just hack it off at exactly the length you want.

Its just a little thing but while the fuel mass is negligible it does two things in the combustion process that cause the exhaust flow rate to be much higher than the intake flow rate. It gets hot and expands and the liquid gasoline turns into a whole slew of gases during combustion . The simple volume of the exhaust gases is considerably greater than the volume of intake gases. The ports on the exhaust side are smaller than the intake because the exhaust gases are under a lot of pressure as they leave the cylinder and escape into a low pressure environment and do not need the larger ports typical of intake ports and valves.
