Bozo the truck (66 chevy C10)still laughing

Hi all

I have lurked for a while and now it is time to show my junk!

This showed up on Bozeman Montana craigslist. I had a freind check it out. His big comment was it is not as bad as your old 60. I think he has some memory loss about my old truck! This thing is east coast style rusty. I can reach under the cowl from the inside and grab the wiper mechanism. ouch!

But since I'm into beating dead horses.

I sanded it down with some 120 grit, taped it off.

The primer is some cheap summit surfacer and the white is satin rustolium cut with about 30% acetone.

The Red is implement paint my old shop mate had laying around.

Not bad for a weekend and $750 total. The white paint and good light hides the huge flaws in the body. Every panel is dented and rusted. The hood is worth saving and that's about it, but we will get to that later.

Re: Rusted beast (66 chevy C10)

Thanks for the comments. I will post up a bunch of picks and updates this week when I have time.

On the paint choice... The reverse two tone has always bin a signature of mine. I'm not sure I like how it was executed on this truck. Some thing isn't right, maybe the grill, maybe where the paint line is on the top, maybe the shade white. I am leaning toward more of a cream white. The cool thing is its temporary. All the sheet metal (cab included) is getting changed out.

Any thoughts on what is wrong about the look (yea I know it needs to be lower or have white walls) let it fly....

Re: Rusted beast (66 chevy C10)

I like the fact you did you own paint but I do agree with you, it's just not right. Reminds me of Bozo the Clown. Red nose (grill), red lips (bumpers) red hair (cab), red shoes (wheels). LOL

Not sure what the best change would be. First thoughts would be repainting the grill and bumpers but not sure what color would work best. I would say try the grill white and I think the rest would look okay at that point.

Looks good. Maybe chrome bumpers instead of painted ones? I like the reverse look too.

Bozo the truck... Sweet! I'm a big enough dork to keep the name.

Maybe a dull ardent silver on the bumpers and grill. Chrome implies good money I should put into the motor.

Re: Bozo the truck (66 chevy C10)still laughing

The first set of pictures are from June. The idea was to buy it in Mt and have something to drive when I go out to play. That idea went up in a mushroom cloud of much more complex thoughts.

Some more shots from June

The interior is the best part of the truck so far (I set my standards real low). The kid that I bought it from sprayed the whole thing with semi gloss black. He did a good job for the most part. I don't think he cleaned the doors before they were sprayed. The paint is pealing bad. The dash is in really nice shape. Deluxe heater and the gauge panel. The seat is toast. Mexy blanket here we come.

The motor runs like a sewing machine! No smoke and good compression. I got it to idle at 350 rpm. I never had one that would go that low. We spent a couple of hours trying to get it to 300. We being my old shop mates. The irony of four horsepower guys trying to get a motor to idle super low. They would screw with a toaster if they thought they could make it go faster.

A couple more exterior shots. Look close there is literally no panel that isn't going to need major work.

Ok so I didn't do a good job with detail shots. It's a start.

Re: Rusted beast (66 chevy C10)

Looks to me like you've got almost the same damage to the front passenger bed panel as I do. All the dings, dents and rust aside it is still a cool looking truck. A suggestion for your color combo (since you asked); Painting the bumpers and grill a silver-ish color might help out considerably... a satin or semi-gloss black may even work too since the interior is also black.

Re: Rusted beast (66 chevy C10)

update from the most recient trip.

I bought a 64 that sat since smoking the motor in 94. Some body took out some aggression on the windshield and side windows but other than that it's in pretty good shape. At least better shape than it appears in the pictures.

The bed had about 2" of compost in it from the tree it sat under. The bed wood is/was toast.

The plan was to quicky swap beds. I ended up fabing up new bed wood on the quick out of 3/4 pressure treated.

Stripping the old wood and strips was easy but time consuming. Grinding all the heads off sucked.

A little time spent with the pressure washer and it looked even better. The thought at this point was to compeatly disassemble the bed and just save the bed sides. but ....

Some body did a great job of welding the thing together. What is tough to see is they welded down the face and up under the pocket. Back to the original plan. Swap it out for the 66 bed and ad new wood.

The best option I could think of was to use 3/4 pressure treat ply. I was on a bit of a time budget, like one day.

I chose to cut out two 6' by 4' sections and set them tight to either end with the 1" gap in the middle. I used 1/4" by 1 1/2" bolts as opposed to 5/16 carriage bolts because the whole thing will need pulled apart again. When I redo it I will have the room to put in 5/16 carriage in and have them tight.

That was day one of this most recent weekend. I am enjoying the orange bed and white body. I wasn't completely sold on the white and red.

That was a long day!

Re: Rusted beast (66 chevy C10)

Hey if any body has suggestions on what I might do differently with the bed when I pull it back apart. I want to blast the undersides and the rust on the top sides. Lay down some epoxy and some chassis paint. I am leaning away from the original style bed wood. It is coming back to Maryland eventually where I plan on using it as my work truck. I am half thinking about welding in a steal floor. Thoughts?

Re: Rusted beast (66 chevy C10)

My dad had a bed floor out of diamond plate aluminum and it worked great. Steel should work out as well. Mine has 2x4s in it from the previous owner. Nice and durable and no worries about messing it up.

I am worried about rot so regular two by material is out of the question.

A little FYI for you. The rear bed sill is welded to the bedsides at the factory.

Re: Rusted beast (66 chevy C10)

Thanks on the bed links.

The rest of the weekend were spent striping out the cab and chassi

Some of the rust spots in the 64 cab

Pretty average stuff I have seen better but not for two hundred bucks.

For storage reasons I needed to make everything as compact as possible.

So that's how it will be for the next couple of months or until the spring.

Now to start work on the Blazer.

Re: Rusted beast (66 chevy C10)

Hi all I am back and it is time to restart the project!!!!!!!

I am resurrecting this thread because it looks like I am finally going to drive this thing across country. I will be towing the 64 parts carcass. The plan is to fly into Bozeman on the 11th Screw around with friends and work on the truck until Tuesday the 15th. At 4 am leave Bozeman for Omaha Stay with friends there. Friday leave for the east coast.

The route: I will be taking 90 out of MT, at Souix Falls 29 south to Omaha. From Omaha 80 across Iowa to 74. 74 through Peoria to Indi. 70 through Daton/Columbus to Wheeling. 79 south out of Wheeling picking up 68 at Morgantown. 68 to 70 and home free.

I have a fairly loose schedule. Any suggestions.

Sounds like you are planning quite the adventure! Keep us posted on how the trip goes. Oh, and when coming through SD, keep an eye out for critters. Deer have been on the move pretty heavily lately.

Re: Rusted beast (66 chevy C10)

Your the second person to mention the HAMB road trip. You wouldn't have a link would you? I probably shouldn't read it..... Kind of like watching the money pit before buying a house.

I have owned the truck for almost 2 years. It is my transportation when I go see my buddy's out there. I just hope to avoid the deer. I have taken down more of those bastards with trucks than rifle.
