How can I tell what all is in my motor

I have a 383 (so the guy who sold it to me says) in my scottsdale but I want to find out exactly what it is so that I can mod it and not worry about it blowing up or something. If I take it apart should all the parts have part numbers and maybe manufacturers markings on them? Also how can I tell what the compression ratio is? Thanks
