Another question...
I'd like to know if the topic of Sirens in the pick ups has been discussed before.
I did a search and got threads and classifieds for ambulances, and rescue rigs.. Mine was not either of those, but it has a siren mounted to the wheel well, and rigged to wind up and howl when you press the horn button. Startled me a bit when I pressed the horn for the first time.. And the sound must have traveled for blocks. It's obviously been there a long time.. And seeing as the truck never left California, I'm left to wonder what purpose it held. It's definitely an old style siren, starting out low and really going at it in a few seconds.. reminded me of Andy and Barney in their Mayberry car.. Anyone? J. |

Re: Another question...
Could you post some pics of the truck and siren? Could it possibly be a brush truck?

Re: Another question...
Here's the pictures..
Siren on the wheel well of the driver's side. It was wired directly into the horn button on the steering wheel, the actual factory horn was still in place in front of it and, although it was disconnected, it still worked. I merely took the wire off the siren and put it onto the horn connection, and the horn worked. Then there's the brackets on each side of the header panel by the doors.. Brackets for lights maybe? J.

Re: Another question...
maybe in a previous life it was a fire chief's truck or something. Does it have any mounting for radio equipment (holes for a Radio under dash, holes for antenna, etc.)?

Re: Another question...
I'll check in the morning for under dash holes..
It does have a plastic #3 on the glove compartment door though. It's old and brittle, stuck on well and going nowhere. J.

Re: Another question...
One thing it does NOT have, is a plastic grille.
It's got a replacement made of expanded metal. J.

Re: Another question...
Well, the fact that is green, and has dual mounting brackets for some specific purpose and that the grille broke out and was replaced by metal mesh AND it has a siren mounted under the hood....makes me thing that maybe it was a game warden-type of vehicle.
Is there anything on the SPID label on the glovebox door that indicates it was sold to a specific governmental agency or maybe there's a COPO mentioned? As for the siren....I'd love to have one on my school bus. That would be something to get the attention of the people who just can't get used to the idea that STOP means just that, when kids are getting on/off of the bus. I'd love to have that siren wail at 'em.....Think they'd have to change clothes afterwards?

Re: Another question...
the brackets on the cowl are common for campers, but could have been to tie down anything that hung over the cab.

ChevLoRay might be onto something. We spent a vacation week in Vogel State Park in N GA the summer of '69. The park ranger drove a '67 or'68 short fleet, painted dark green. It used dash lights and a hidden siren. V8, 4bbl, 3OTT. He did love to squeal the tires in 1st and 2nd when leaving on a call.
