Re: Seattle to Spokane

Cool pics, would you say the Denali was more powerful or was it just a smoother ride?

How'd you do for gas on the trip?

I would have to say better all around! Better ride, better power had no problems with the hills, and i got about 10 mpg which is what my 86 got while i wasnt towing! if you look at my gallery there are pics of when i towed it with the 86! which i think are pretty sweet!

Please don't take this the wrong way, as I'm not trying tii Hijack this Thread.
I am toying with the idea of towing my 72 (after its painted),
from Northern California to Southern California, via Hwy 5 (approx 500 Miles).
I've NEVER towed a vehicle before. We have a 2005 GMC Sierra Extended Cab with a Tow Package.
My Wife is hesitant because shes afraid I'll blow out the Tranny.
I know theres a steep grade of about 12 miles (uphill) going down South towards LA.
Was wondering if anyone has any Do's/Don'ts/Pointers ect.

I helped a really good friend tow his 67 long bed 2wd from the state of Wyoming to Minnesota. The trip was over 900 miles one way.
As others have pointed out, take your time and DO NOT USE OVERDRIVE on the tow vehicle.

He was pulling the 67 with his '04ish 1-ton. I was pulling some other extra heavy trailer with his '04ish 5.3 liter Youkon.

Make sure your trailer has breaks. I'm guessing that surge brakes on the trailer are probably illegal so you'll want to make sure the towing vehicle is equipped with a brake controller.

I start getting nervous when the trailer you're pulling is heavier than the vehicle doing the pulling but that is what the trailer brakes are for.

Plan for everything. Have a spare for the trailer. One for the vehicle. Tools, jump suit or similar so you can roll underneath something and take the dirty clothes off for the rest of the trip. On our trek we lost a trailer tire near Belle Fourche, SD. No big deal. We had the tools, had the tire, weren't racing so we simply fixed it and moved on. (Then prayed we wouldn't lose another tire on the trailer)

Plan on 50 mph. If you're going 500 miles, plan on 10 hours minimum. That is a pretty long day so plan on driving there the day before and getting a good nights sleep.

When we did the 900 mile pull we drove out there one day, spent a day pretty much doing nothing then drove back the following day.

Think about the other drivers on the road, not just yourself. If you're tired or have a crappy trailer with no brakes you are not only a hazard to yourself but to the rest of us on the road.
