What is broken off on my waterneck?????

I have no pictures but its an 85 c-10 1/2 ton 305-auto. On my water neck is two what looks like screw in pieces, one has vaccum lines attached to it, and the other is broken off. I did find an electrical wire unhooked near by, does anyone know what this broken piece is?

Thanks
Gregg

Is your thermostat gauge working in the truck? That might be what it is. Something to do with your thermostat.

I am not positive but on my pickup it looks like a thermal regulator switch that will limit vacuum to the distributor or god knows what else on the 305.

That's exactly what it does. It's an emissions era thing that blocks the vacuum to the advance unit until the engine warms up. This was done back when they used "ported vacuum" and had an advance curve that was intended to work with it.

Ok this is good information, but what is that actual part name, so I can replace it

Thanks

Re: What is broken off on my waterneck?????

I got a plain old chrome water neck to replace mine when it broke. I thought that it had to do with a high idle until the truck warmed up. Anyway, I got rid of mine and then got rid of all of that smog equipment. I dont have to smog my truck where I live so im not sure if you can get rid of yours. I dont know the actual name of it.

fluffilator valve, just kidding.

I need to get a new one also. I don't know the exact technical name, I was just going to pull mine out and go to the parts store and hopefully calling it a thermal vacuum tree will be enough info to find a new one.

You might have to go to the dealer for that, an autoparts chain may not have them. It's not exactly a "wear-out" item.

If it's the piece shown in my picture, that was picked up at the local auto supply store, the one with an A, but you're not in the zone.

Re: What is broken off on my waterneck?????

Our engine actually had a small fire. I have the name of those parts somewhere in a file. I was able to look them up online, but the guy at the store didn't or couldn't seem to be able to find them. I had to give him the part number. It's on the external drive, so may take a while.

Re: What is broken off on my waterneck?????

I can tell you what is on my 81. There are two of those temp / vacuum devices. One screws into the thermostat cover ( such as yours) and the other screws into the intake manifold just to the left of the thermo cover. The Edelbrock Performer manifold I bought did not have the place to screw in the second one, but the new thermo cover had two places ( like yours ) so I screwed both of them into it. They are made by Airtex. A number of them are listed at http://auto-parts.myride.com/auto-pa...-vacuum-switch . Rockauto.com carries many as well, I purchased mine from rockauto. You need to know two things about each one. How many ports, and what COLOR it is. On my 81 350, there is a blue one, and a white one. I gather the diagram on the side of the air cleaner is gone.. as it shows some of this info too. One of mine was in the distributor hose chain, and the other was in the smog pump / air cleaner hose chain. Your local parts supplier may be able to tell which ones were on your year / engine combo by looking at ported vac switches under the emissions section for your vehicle.

Yup part of the problem is the air cleaner is gone so no diagram. Its currently running without it so I may just plug it off and be done with it LOL
