Two 70s and a 69 cheap!

My new father in law called me on our honeymoon and we were within short driving distance of looking at a 70 4x4 runner, 70 2wd runner, and a 69 parts pickup. Looked good for 2600 so went back the next day to pick them up. He wanted the 2wd and I the 4wd and he also took the parts pickup. Not much rust on any of them but a fair amount of dents. The 4wd had some front end issues (wore out ball joints and bent tie rods) so that was to be hauled with the parts pickup if possible, and it was. The father in law drove his home, with the exception of stale gas and a plugged fuel filter things went ok for the 140 mile trek.
The load.

Re: Two 70s and a 69 cheap!

Thanks and no the parts pickup didnt move one bit to my suprise. Hanging off the trailer like that I thought for sure there would have been at least one issue but it went great.

Only updated pic so far, swaped on the ralleys and 31 10.50s off my 80 since this is the new "ranch/runaround" truck. Pulled the floor out and found that this thing is about 85% rust free. Right front fender in the front, and a little on the driver side rocker is it. A little bubbling on the floor but painted the floor on both drivers and passengers side with POR 15 to keep the little bit of rust it has from spreading. Also cleaned the heater box out since mice had about 10 lbs of crap (not kidding) stuffed in there as well as a new heater core. Had to put new ball joints and tie rods in it since 40 was about all you wanted to keep it between the ditches. Just gonna fix a few more things and drive the thing.

Re: Two 70s and a 69 cheap!

Also I picked up a 70 Custom 2wd about a month ago for $450. One of the only reasons I wanted it was for the bed with a steel floor that is in pretty good shape except for the 2 holes for the aux. gas tanks. When I went to pick it up I found out it has tilt wheel, power brakes, power steering and a 4 row radiator! No engine or tranny and it hasnt been licensed since 92 but everything is there, exhaust and all, to drop a 350/350 in it and drive it. But I am parting it out. The front fenders and hood are in awesome shape for the age and the tailgate is almost perfect as well. The cab hasnt fared as well though. Cab corners and rocker panels are gone and the drivers side floor and some of the passenger floor need replacing. Nothing too major but I dont want to fix this one up. Sorry for fuzzy pics. Will try to get some more for the picture nazis we have.

Re: Two 70s and a 69 cheap!

Well her dad has a 70 GMC short stepper 4wd redone quite a few years ago and he just got a 68 lwb fleetside 4wd from his uncle that only needs paint, and also has a 2wd 70 GMC lwb fleetside that he wants to redo some time along with the 2wd chevy above, so its kind of in her blood lol.

Thats awesome you've got a father in law with something cool in common and each have multiple trucks!

How'd you get the parts truck up on the trailer?

Re: Two 70s and a 69 cheap!

There was a cut bank at the POs place, thank God, and we pulled it to the trailer with the 4wd and used a come-a-long to bring it on the rest of the way. I also forgot to mention her younger brother has a 72 on a 69 4wd lwb (the 69 was all bondo and primer)and a 68 3/4 ton with a decent body that I will get the frame and running gear off of for my 68.

Re: Two 70s and a 69 cheap!

Have you done anything else to the 4x4? That looks like a pretty clean and unmolested one- hard to find like that.

Re: Two 70s and a 69 cheap!

Yes I have, no pics yet but I put in a new dash pad, 02 or 03 chevy seats, new floor mat, new gauge bezel, new weather stripping on the doors, put an add-a-leaf in the rear, moved gas tank to the rear, and built a headache rack for it. I also did the headlight relay mod. It is fairly clean but it has alot of dents and cracks in the box. That is where the blue truck comes in to donate the box whenever I can get the trim holes welded up and some paint on the thing. I suppose I should start a build thread on it since there is alot of tinkering I have done to it.
