Ignition coil?

I have a 69 C10 with the 250 inline 6. It does not have an ignition coil. I guess it doesn't have to have one, since mine runs fine without it. Should I have one? What is it's purpose? I noticed it on another member's 250 L6. I also noticed it in LMC catalog, it claims improved gas mileage. Any knowledge would be great.

Re: Ignition coil?

Somehow, someway, your truck has a coil. If it has an HEI, the coil may be in the distributor cap. If it has points and a condensor, then it has a coil that is present somewhere. The coil is what creates the voltage to fire the spark plugs when the rotor turns and points to the terminal inside the distributor cap. But, rest assured, your truck has a coil. It may not be like the one in the LMC catalog, but it won't run without one.

As far as a coil "guaranteeing better gas mileage", that's a matter of semantics. If it doesn't have one, the engine won't run and it won't use any gas. So, in that respect, a coil will enable your engine to burn gasoline. Is that better mileage?

Talking Re: Ignition coil?

Thanks for the quick response......... I notice his distributer is small and mine is quite a bit bigger. So I guess the coil is internal. The members name is Conroe Trucker. His L6 is for sale in the sale section. I learn something new every time I'm on the forum.

Re: Ignition coil?

The LMC catalog is referring to using the coil with pertronix's electronic ignition.
