looking for original tires

does anyone know if original tires are available. the old style pie-crust, tall, 7:50 x 15 or 8:50 x 15, blackwall bias ply. i think originally firestone.

a radial with the look would be great.

these trucks look best with a tall tire that fills the wheel opening and all i am finding is 235 75R 15 or ugly trailer tires.

if anyone is interested in restoring their truck, what are you doing for tires.

thanks for info... i tried searching the forums but no luck.

Re: looking for original tires

Check out Coker tire, here is a link http://store.cokertire.com/tire-bran...blackwall.html

Coker also sells "Coker Classics" they have the "look" of the older 4-ply pie crust tires, but that they are radials. The kicker is I think they are only available as wide whitewalls. Here is a photo of a 34 Ford Truck with the Coker Classics.

Re: looking for original tires

i did check with coker and they don't have them. they have a military tire and some www that are pretty tall. but not really similar enough.

coker said they would bring them back from the original molds if the interest was there.

anybody interested?

Re: looking for original tires

I purchased a set of five Goodyear Traction High Miler bias ply tires from Walmart last year. They look great, but they may be more like the trailer tires that you are trying to avoid. I'll dig up a photo of them and post soon.

Re: looking for original tires

might try this place - but these are all radials, i think... good catalog though. Someone on this site passed this info to me, came in handy. Good luck - I agree, the tall stock ones look good. I was trying to decide also - but ended up going with radials for a little better ride, etc. The size that seemed to work best for me was 235/75/15 - but these are a little wider than stock. So if you want the stock look - and a radial - 225 or 215/75/15s would be mo betta. Pic is of 235/75/15s on stock 5.5" wheel.

Also, this old tire cross-ref chart may help in the sizing department when thinking about new metric coded tires. http://www.dbtires.com/crossreference.html

Re: looking for original tires

coker did use to sell the original size tires for these trucks because i have saw them listed in their advertisements a few years ago.1965 and earlier trucks used 6.70 15" tires.1966 used 7.75 15" tires 4 ply.most people do not want them but hey they have advantages.the trucks will drive better with the correct size tires and will stick to the road better than say a wide tire will.also you could try a p215/75/r15 which would be close to the correct size and drive some better since they are radials.

Re: looking for original tires

I run 700-15 LT tires on my 60 and they look just like 50 years ago.

Re: looking for original tires

thanks for the pics... seems to be a good choice of tires out there. the look i'm going for needs 30" tall tires and most 235 75 15 radials are in the 25 -27 inch range. the 215 75 15 are even shorter. a 6 ply 6.70 15 bias tire with highway tread would be perfect (right at 30" tall) and you could do a bit of a big and little look with 6 ply 7.50 15's in the back. i will post a pic tomorrow with the old tires i have that i'm trying to replace...

jocko... really nice truck

62 bowtie... the www's with that pale green color looks great

Re: looking for original tires

Hey thanks very much Clemdaddy, I appreciate that!

One comment - all 235/75/15's should be right around 28-29" tall. mine are right at 28.75". Only reason I say that is because I just recently scoured the universe for a blackwall 235/75/15 (black on both sides) and at least the diameter was consistent - and was always mid-28's, or close to 29. The method for labeling/measuring should make them always about the same - and it should be very consistent, so I'd be a little cautious of someone advertising 235/75/15s at 25-27 inches tall - maybe a typo??.

255/70/15's are 29"++ but they won't give you the original tire look - much wider than stock (but look awesome on rally wheels).

Good luck, can't wait to see what you end up putting on!

Re: looking for original tires

The problem is the industy does not make a tall "85" series radial truck tire in 15". The "85" series is only made in 16" truck tires. The closest original looking 15" bais truck tire is the 7.00-15, which still is made an can be ordered through truck tire dealers. The 7.00R-15 is also made by Yokohama in radial, but they are expensive.

Exactly as you said, and that's why I use them.
