Bigger is almost always better in the range you've mentioned. In a heavy vehicle a 383 or 400 or BB will get you moving with much less effort than a 302 or a 327.

People talk about how well the smaller ones rev. A 350 can easily spin to 6000, a forged bottom end will go past 7000.

Re: 302, 327, or 350?????????????

I've always had a weakness for 327's too. I built one for a street stock we used to race just to prove that we weren't cheating. Running against 406's we went out and won the first 3 features a 3 different tracks. They are amazing "little" motors. THat being said...Get the longest crankarm you can. either a 350 or 400. A 350 will usually be cheaper to build. If you give me a certain sum of money to build one I will usually take the 350. If you are going mild...go with the 400

Re: 302, 327, or 350?????????????

truthfully if i had to choose 327, because my dad had one with 400+hp in a nova and it was wicked!! and theirs alot of 350's out there, so u can be part of the v8 crowd, yet still be different. most(if not all)parts will swap too, if u later want a larger motor.
however our trucks are on the heavier side, so technically a longer stroke is better so 350, or better yet 400.

If you do go 327 try to find a rare large journal crank. 68 I believe, in limited supply.

Re: 302, 327, or 350?????????????

I don't want to hijack this thread, but thought it was close enough, and would lend to the discussion.

So,
If one was going to go with a 350, what's the latest year you'd go with?
Obviously things changed big time in 88/89
So should we stay 87 and older, or what?

Thanks

Re: 302, 327, or 350?????????????

in a fairly heavy truck I'd want the bigger c.i.d
in a lite car the 327 is a swinding fun machine..
the 302 is a tempermental beast..if built for power..and has no low end..
I'd build a 350 with a aftermarked forged 400 crank for a 383..
vortec heads and a nice somewhat hairy but still mild roller hyd cam..
450hp is easy

Re: 302, 327, or 350?????????????

I think I read somewhere that the 350 changed the way the intake manifold bolted up in 85.
Not sure though.
I'm just thinking I'd prefer a 350 that is physically similar to all the 70's 350s.

I am not certain what year the intake bolts changed but on my 86 Camaro with a 305 and TPI the intake was the same as the old blocks.

Small block 421 or 427 and call it a 327. Once its all togeather no one but you will know its actual displacement. The tbi 305 in my Blazer is actualy a 406.

96+ vortec is the best factory sbc block, if it comes with heads, even better

exactly, not sure why people want a smaller motor to be "different"
