Dash pad struggles.

Well, since the engine is pretty much toast on my truck I've decided not to waste too much energy on it right now. But I had bought a new dash pad and it was hogging up space in the garage. So I thought I'd rip off the old dash pad and put the new one in. That way I could throw the old one away, and make space. My truck is an 80. I bought an 81 up dash pad because I had a non-AC dash bezel and dash inlay (trim strip?) that fits in an 81 up truck. So I pull my 80 dash pad out, and the dash bezel. I put the new dash in position. I notice the VIN pad is holding the new dash askew. And it looked like another place in the middle of the dash near the antenna wire. And on the extreme passenger side it looked like maybe some trimming might be needed? Anyway. I took it back out, put it back in the plastic, and threw it up in the attic. Out of the way one way or the other, right?
