Turn signal question.
What if any is the difference between a 64 gmc and chevy steering column wiring? I've been told they were different but not sure if they mean the connections or the wiring itself. Can anyone help?

Re: Turn signal question.
When I replaced the turnsignal switch in my 63 the original part was a lot different than the replacement switch I got for a 63 Chevy. At first I ordered just the canceling cam but the switch in my GMC had electrical contacts built into the cam and the replacement piece didn't. I replaced the whole switch and now it works fine. The wires in the stock switch harness were different colors than the corresponding wires in the underdash harness but the replacement switch wires were the right colors.

Re: Turn signal question.
Great question. This falls into the "funky years" for 60-66 chev/gmc steering column stuff. Here's what I "think" i know...
63 chev and 63-66 gmc cancelling cams are the same. 64-66 chev are a different part from the 63-66 gmc though. 64-66 marked new years for both chev and gmc turn signal switches, but they were not the same switches. Something tells me I didn't answer your question... But I did confirm they are in fact supposed to be different. Another consideration is when chev and gmc came up with hazard flashers as standard - I'm not certain if they became standard in the same year - and for some reason I think gmc went with them as standard equipment first (and I'm talkin about built into the turn signal switch, not the external optional hazard flashers that mounted under the dash). So - IF (big if) gmc came out with hazards as standard in 64, that is probably the difference between the turn signal switches - haz flashers built into switch for gmc. They were still only options in chevs thru 66. I have NO idea if that is the case - stuff I've heard here and there. Did YOUR truck have hazard flashers standard (it's a 64 gmc)?? Not sure I'm barking up the right tree here - but it's the only thing I can think of. Maybe this post will jar someone's memory that knows the right answer. good luck. |
