Door Lock Parts
My son and I just bought a '72 Chevy 1/2 ton, 2wd for a project. And it's definitely a project. One of the first things we want to address is the driver's side door.
We took the door apart to see why it won't lock, and we found that there are a couple of things missing. but I'm not sure exactly what. The cylinder is there, but it just rotates. There is nothing for it to touch. There's something on the latch mechanism that looks like it's supposed to be engaged by the lock. But there's nothing in between the latch mechanism and the cylinder. Also, there's nothing connected to the inside door lock knob. You can just pull it straight out. What parts do we need to fix this, and where's a good place to get them? Thanks! |

I would buy good used parts from one of the guys on this site as the repop door lock parts are not as strong as the old ones. I used new parts on mine and they didnt last very long. Look in the catalogs to figure out what you need and then go to the used parts guys here and someone will have the parts you need.

I would order a parts catalog from LMC or Brothers. They are a good source of info as to what parts you need and assembly of things. They are free and even if you don't get your parts there they are good to have.

Feel around inside the bottom of the door the parts might be down there.

If you haven't already done so, check carefully in the bottom of the door for some missing parts. When clips break, the linkage pieces often end up in the bottom of the door.

Here is a picture of how the lock pawl sets in the door latch... It moves the large "C" shaped piece up and down. LockDoc

Pop the clip off of the spare lock, place on the pawl, and then replace the clip. As others have posted you have a pretty good chance of finding the pawl in the bottom of the door. If not, click over to the parts board and get a used set from one of the many dismantlers who lurk there.

Pretty much, any GM door lock cylinder from 1967-1987 and even later trucks will work by changing the pawl. As long as they are the same style lock. There are three different length lock cases for the cars so you have to watch that, but other than that any of them will work... LockDoc

LMC catalog is a great reference tool but I find their parts sometimes very "cheap". Also, when you call to order and have questions they are clueless. I prefer to use REZ Engineering as he is an avid enthusist and his parts are quality and pricing is right in there with LMC. Call Don at 406-727-9267 for a catalog.
