Vin #'s, motor swaps, and PO's, now I'm confused

So I've had my '68 for over a year now, It belonged to my grandpa before that. He told me it originally had an inline 6 in it but was swapped sometime before 83 for a 350, according to the code on the passenger side near the water pump the engine is a '75, I'm pretty positive this is correct, also when I replaced the oil pan gasket only the 75+ one would fit So i think that confirms it. Now the vin # on the door jam says its a 68 with a v8, and the SPID also says the same thing, so I just wondering, why would someone change the vin? and I didn't know you could even change the SPID back then anyways, was/is it required that you do that? I live in TX and I'm pretty sure it's always been a Texas truck.

If the VIN starts out with CS148....., it was a 6-cylinder. If it starts out with CE148....it was a V-8. If the VIN on the door jamb and the VIN on the SPID match, there's a possibility that your grandfather simply forgot what was in it before the engine change.

Age does strange things to our brains and our tongues....I can testify (Can I get an AMEN!) I have said things that I immediately knew were not right, but my mouth said it anyway.

Both vins start out CE1. Yeah i guess that's possible haha although the way he tells it you'd think he was right, I guess it doesn't matter that much just thought it was interesting. Are there any other clues that might point to what motor was original? motor mounts? fuel line sizes? it doesn't have the original gas tank though.

How close is the dist. to the firewall? That may give us a clue, but not confirm from that.

CE1.....it was a 6-cylinder. On the SPID you'll see which engine it had, if it wasn't the base (230) engine. For that matter, it may be that the 250 was the base engine. A 292 was an optional 6-cylinder. But those are the three in-line truck engines for '68.

Sounds like gramps was right. Motor mounts would have to be changed to put the V8 in it. Which engine it had has nothing to do with the gas tank.

How would CE1 mean 6 cylinder? I was under the impression that E was the code for V8 and S for 6 cylinder? thanks for the help guys. I'll go check my SPID again

ce is a v8, period.
off topic, but mentioned above... no 230s in these trucks either. The 250 was the base motor in the inline trucks.

My bad on the CE. I mis-typed the E when it should have been an S. When you have a stroke, tell me about how easy it is for you to make mistakes. LonghornMan is right. So was my first reply. A 230 could be had in the 63-66 bodies, and the 250 was an upgrade.I didn't rely on my written data, and did some guessing, which was wrong. As for mounts, the 6-cylinder front mount is underneath the harmonic balancer and mounts the engine to the crossmember. The V8 mounts are on the side, beneath the exhaust manifolds.
