Column mounted tachs

I'm thinking about getting a retro Sun tach. Just wondering what it will look like on the column.

if your truck is a driver, it'll look like a huge light in the windshield right in your line of vision at night.
The lit up face will reflect in the glass causing you to cuss unexpectedly and often.

I found that out the hard way! I was driving home one night, about an hour drive, I tried to make it by leaning over and around the reflection, that got old fast! They I tried to cover the tach with a piece of paper, it kept falling off. Finally I just turned the dash lights off! The next day I tried building a visor over the tach, that looked like crap so I finally just unhooked the light. I will be mounting a tach in the dash as soon as I find a suitable one!

The bulb is burnt out on this tach, so I cannot comment on the spotlight affect at night.

Dash mounted is retro...

Or you could mount it on the A-Pillar.

you can also take the rear view mirror off, leave the hang down bracket and mount your tack on it. we used to do this on alot of our street/race cars back in the day. or mount it under the dash , kinda hard to see but with a shift light you will be fine.

Mine's on the column, but mounted down at like a 2 o'clock position

I had the same problem with it reflecting in the windshield, it even reflects sometimes during that day too. In the dash is the best way IMO

Depends on what time zone your in.

I have a 5" equus mounted on the column. It is backlight with different color options (right now I have it blue). I have never had a glare problem and just Tuesday I drove 1.5 hours in the dark.

I just found the Retro Sun Super tach at JC Whitney for $99 and free shipping. Eh, I've wasted more on less. thanks for the help and keep the pics coming

some people are more bothered by things like this (the light reflections) than other people. I can't stand driving a late model with an armor all'd dash in the sun. The reflections drive me crazy. Samr thing with dash lights, I like them turned down low, and if I am on a real dark road, I'll just turn them off and go by the hum of the pipes.
However, at least you have been informed on the possibility of a 'spotlight' in the windshield driving you insane.

Odd, mine is much like brn agn's and I've never noticed a glare problem -- and such things usually bother me. Like Andy, I turn the dash lights down very low at night. I even removed the inside rearview mirror many years ago because meeting other night traffic appeared like someone overtaking you from behind at a very high rate of speed.

I've run them an the a-pillar,column (top and off-center),as well as up on the dash.I never noticed any glare at all.It was lit just like the rest of the instruments.I always run the light wire in with the rest so it's rieostat controlled.It can be dimmed of cut out if needed.I feel it's best to put a tach the closest to line-of-view as possible.When a tach is used for hot rodding,it's usually when you're gettin' it on and it's important to keep your eyes ahead.It doesn't take much to get sideways.That's why they were ever put there in the first place.I only started going with tach dashes when classic factory aesthetics became my focus and I don't tear my stuff up like I used to.I like the a-pillar best when it comes to mounting out of the dash.
