Vent windows

Are all vent window assemblies the same from 73 to 87 or are the 70's different from the 80's? (they appear to be the same). I need to replace the driver side in my 76 but I was'nt sure if an 80's vent window would still work. Any help with this is appreciated.

Re: Vent windows

I put one from an 80's truck in my 78. It works. The shape of the glass and the lock is slightly different and the older ones are held in by a few more screws.

Re: Vent windows

My experience with replacing mine was that the 70s models have one less screw holding them to the door above the window, I have one out of a 70s pickup in my '86.

Re: Vent windows

I have also found what Slonaker says to be true. My 87 Has an extra hole for a screw through the door into the frame of the VW. Not sure exactly what year the change happened though.

Re: Vent windows

I changed my 78 jimmys to 89 subs front windows and vents, seals and rubber done.worked no probs cept the window going down, hit the reinforcing piece around the door handle.bang bang solved that.thinner glass, i like the lock there.and the 89 had a 2nd screw on the vent no issues, didn't use it.

still gotta do drivers side and finish up pull handles etc

That's usually a bad thing.... I think at that point all you can do is change the whole assembly.

Maybe someone else can chime in with a repair, but I just bought a new one for my 30 when it rusted off.

That's what happened to my 78. The bottom stud broke and the window was flapping in the breeze. I just got the whole assembly from a newer truck for $5 at the junkyard and was done with it.

If you mean the piece that it pivots on, then yes. My driver's side broke off in my hand like that. The passenger's side was broken by a thief who only took some change.

Re: Vent windows

i had an 4 door 81 lemans with that type twist vent window in the rear doors, comimg to a stop a friend(still)opened the rear door and put a foot out, while moving.knowing his foot was next in line to go under the wide tire.i hammered the breaks, the tire he said stopped at the back of his leg on his shoe, causing him to fly forward and pop out the vent window whole and break the bigger with his face apparently even with a broken nose and cuts to the face.he said thanks it coulda been worse

thats why my rear glass is different shade of tint and from a 78 lemans (1 whole window no vent)
