700r4 into a 72 k5
Hello, first off I am new here, I just got my blazer to daily driver status and a friend of mine let me know about this forum, Thank you all in advance for any ifno you may have and I fully intend on droping in.
so I want to put a 700r4 in my blazer, what all needs to be done for this swap, I will be looking at a pre computer controled unit, ( not to offend any one but I do not want any fuel injection or anything computer controlled on this thing) thanks for the help |

700R4s are for the most part mechanically controlled anyway rather than computer controlled. There is a little stand alone wiring you do for the brake switch lockup control, but you won't have any problems running one with a carb. There is a lot of measuring and trial and error getting the TV valve setup right, as well as some fab work in modifying the cross member, T-Case shift linkage, and the torque converter lockup. It's not a really 'difficult' swap, but it is somewhat time consuming, dirty, and can be frustrating if doing by yourself like I did ie: wrestling with transmissions and transfer cases on your own. just did this swap on my '71 K10 Suburban. Easiest way to do this is moving the engine forward about 2 inches. You will need to buy a new output shaft from advance adapters. It is about $150 and well worth it. By moving your motor forward, you do not have to lengthen or shorten your drive-shafts. And it will also give your engine a little more room in the engine bay. It will also allow the transfer case shifter to stay in it's original place too. We did this in the driveway and was fairly easy.....BUT the re-installation of the transfer case was a Pain in the Ass.

Engine forward you have to re-mount exhaust or re-route, new motor mounts or modify old ones also. Also I've heard of guys having transmission pan clearance issues on the front d-shaft at flex which is another reason I didn't go that route.. What else did you encounter by doing engine forward? Curious as to which is more/less work when you really get into it. Aside from mounting all the other issues are the same.

I spoke with the guys from Bowtie (considered to be one of the best shops) You will need to move the engine forward 1.625 inches. Doing so allows everything to fit You won't need modify anything

Maybe I'm missing it, but how can you move the engine forward 1 5/8" and not have to modify anything? Your exhaust isn't going to stretch, you're going to have to modify your motor mounts or something to accomodate..

Also the fan shroud has to be shortened,i just did this also,the drives frame top has the 2 holes already drilled 2 inches ahead,you have to drill the other 6.I would egg shape the 2 holes in the top of the drivers side frame horn and drill the rest 1 .75 inch ahead,2 inches was a little tough to get the mm bolt in.

Exhaust will have to be modified...but I was not worried about it, since i am running new exhaust for my 6.2 diesel. I haven't had any issue with the front driveshaft hitting the pan, but have heard some have had that problem.

Exhaust modification should be easy. If you are just moving it forward a couple inches, cut the tube and install a coupling to add the length you need. Done.

I just rebuilt my 700R4 that I've had since 2000.
It's a very nice UPGRADE for the K5! You're going to love it. Better bottom better top, better mileage. even without the lock-up! But like Dbear said...putting it back in is tricky. F^$kers HEAVY with that xfer case. I installed the tranny then the xfer case. ( I used a separate bottle jack with a plate welded to it to hold the trans in place while I fought with the xfer case on another jack to engage the splines.) Oh.....I kept the 700R4 in lieu of the 4L60E because the adapter for the 4L60e to NP205 was @#$%ing RIdickUless!!!!!!!! Stupid abstards! Oh...because I just installed an LQ9!!! HA!!!!!!! |

in regard to the engine movement....I didn't do that. What I did was have new driveshafts made with C/V joints!! Mainly because of the lift I have and It's a hell of a lot easier to have a new tube weld to a slip joint that screw around moving sh*t. Besides...at 38 years old...what condition are your slip joints in?
