You can pull it off carefully trying to get as much off in one peice and then remove the remaining glue residue with ammonia. Please be in a well ventilated area if you go the ammonia route.

Re: ok geniuses,window tint removal

peal it off in as big of pieces as possible and use glass cleaner that comes in an aresol can we use the brand sprayway its a blue and white can. it seems to break down the glue pretty well. use a razor blade also with the glass cleaner keeping the razor blade wet. carefull not to scratch up the window. its not to bad. Good luck.

Re: ok geniuses,window tint removal

the glue in newer tints break down pretty quickly with nothing more than windex with ammonia.

peel off the film ... soak the glue area with windex ... scrap with a NEW razor blade

Re: ok geniuses,window tint removal

I have used a heat gun with great success. It is still a slow and tedious process, but it helps the glue stay on the tint not on the glass.

Simple green also works well for what glue is left.

They make tint-off. Peel off tint, spray and wipe. Should be found anywhere that sells tint....Walmart has it.

I used tint off when I peeled the old stuff off my Dodge before I retinted them.

Worked great.

Re: ok geniuses,window tint removal

My tint guy uses super clean. Don't cut it, use it straight, and use a LOT of it. I have done is several times with excellent success.

You should see him do it. He can do a window in 1 minute. Within 10 minutes, it will be re-tinted.

I've used this method and it worked well. I don't really think there is a "quick and easy" way to remove tint.

Go to the Dollar Store and buy Ammonia and a cheap pump spray gun. Easy OFF.

Let the window sit in the sun and warm up, most of the glue comes off with the tint.

Re: ok geniuses,window tint removal

A former student of mine who is now a Washington State Patrol Trooper carrys a razor blade and tells the clown with the over tinted windows "you peel it off or I will". That usually gets the job done in record time. There are some around here that I would swear are painted black rather than tinted..

Re: ok geniuses,window tint removal

It really depends on how long the tint has been there. The reason is two fold: 1. older tint may have become vulcanized to your glass due to age and temperature (hot/cold). 2. The composition of the adhesive. This is where you just have to use process of elimination. In science, we know that like polarities of molecucular stuctures disolve others with the same moluecular polaities. For example, oil based adhesives are disolved with oil based solvents. Likewise, water based adhesives are disolved with water based solvents. Many factors can still play into this. Anyway, use the process of trial and error. Try the windex/ammonia strategy, if that doesn't work, try goo be gone or some of the other products mentioned above. If the adhesive has been vulcanized to your glass, then only a lot of elbow grease, perserverience and time will do the trick...and of course, a sharp blade. Good luck. I'm sure you'll get it done.

Re: ok geniuses,window tint removal

I used to install tint on office windows back in the late 70's-early 80's, so things may have changed.

Wet the window w/water. Using a sharp razor, we would score the tint (think wall paper removal). We then used water/vinagar and a drop or two of dish soap. Hold newspaper on window and spray w/solution. Keep it wet as best you can. Let the solution work (think paint stripper kinda thing). We usually started in the center so 2 people could work on the same window. Keep it wet, use a sharp razor in a holder avoids scratches in the glass.

YMMV...HTH...don t. .....

Re: ok geniuses,window tint removal

Soak windows with vinegar water and soap solution. cut black plastic garbage bags and place on the wet window tint. Allow this to set in the sun for 3 or 4 hours. respray between the glass and tint to keep it wet as needed. If it has set long enough the tint should come off in a few pieces. Use a new razor blade to scrape the residue off. If you are concerned about placing scratches in the glass look for plastic razor blades (I have no idea where the tint guys get them from though).

This worked great in Phoenix az when the temps were 100+ but you would loose about a gallon in sweat when removing the tint.

+1 with the garbage bag trick, but used ammonia instead of vinegar.

so what does Einstein do when he encounters a car with loud mufflers ... offer to install quieter ones?
