Does anyone know of a Auto trans that is also the auto straight drive too?
My daughter Eclipse has this feature, you can drive it in auto or shift it like a manual if you want without the clutch.
If so what cars trucks would you be looking for that could with stand a mild 305 V-8. I think it would be a fun trans in my truck.

No I'm not going to use the Eclipse one no matter what!

i have never heard of a transmission like you described, but , you might look into a manual valve body for a regular automatic. i think b&m transmissions used to make them. hope that helps, Tony

B&M still makes a dual gate shifter,One side works like factory the other side is a ratchet .

Back in the day, there were quite a few different automatic transmissions. The racing automatic of choice was a B&M Hydro-Stick, which was a modified dual-coupling hydramatic. That transmission was introduced by Oldsmobile in '39. There were tanks built for use during WWII that used that transmission. Even though it was a GM unit, it was also used by Hudson and Lincoln. Those were non-GM applications. But, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Cadillac were the primary stock applications.

The B&M modified version was adapable for use behind a multitude of engines. Until the TH400 came out in '65, there were few automatics that could compete. Torque-Flites were the only reasonably viable alternative, as evidenced by Chrysler-backed drag racing teams, like the Ram Chargers.

But, you could drive your Hydro Stick and select one gear at a time. Otherwise, a dual-coupling hydramatic would shift pretty quickly after starting from a dead stop, then one more time after which there was a pretty big drop from 2nd to 3rd and then once more after that. No, it wasn't shifting into to overdrive. The shift quadrant was P-N-D-Super-Lo-Rev.

Always liked 'em.

My daughter's eclipse is a 4 cyclinder auto that in drive you push it over toward the passenger and it gives you the 1,2,3,4 selector and it auto maticley down shifts but will stay in first gear if you don't up shift it after stopping the car. It's a fun car to drive but it's hard getting in and out of for me. I like the transmission though!

I have a TH400 with a shift kit and with a b&m ratchet shifter and I do this same thing. If I'm cruisin around town I'll throw it in drive but if I'm at the track or wanting to embarrass a mustang, I'll throw it down in 1st and manually shift.

TCI transmissions is selling what your looking for. They use the new GM 6 speed automatic. Check out there site.

Everthing ChevLoRay said is correct. There is the factual evidence. Bolted right to the back of a manual trans bell housing. Wish we still had this option from B&M.

my car has this its an 03 mazda protege 5 and it is called a trip-tronic, shift-tronic, gear-tronic...and many many other names but the clutch is done electronically so you dont have to. Alot of cars now a days have it as an upgrade.... but i agree they are alot of fun you get better drag times with them as well because they shift faster and more reliable.

oh another name that BMW uses is sequential transmission. which they have they that can handle that much power.

i know a bit about them so if you need any help finding info let me know

Volkswagen had that back in late 60 early 70, There was also a modification to a troqure-flite called a Clutch-Flite. They replaced the troqure coverter with a clutch so you could drop the hammer and shift quickly. heres a link

not sure of the company JET TRANSMISSIONS, I think has all the stuff to use a 6 speed automatic from a corvette, in older cars/trucks. Their kit comes with a device that would enable you to "paddle shift " the auto trans, like in Corvettes, and Camaros

Dodge uses the dual shift on a lot of cars, with Heims too. The 300 had it, the Magnum, Charger. It is a popular feature, because, well, it's FUN! I think there is some computer control along with the dual gates, lock up converter stuff.

The BM dual gate should get you close to what your daughter has. (Mitsubishi and Dodge have a long history of sharing parts and features)

I had a '72 Olds Cutlass "S" that had a Hurst dual-gate shifter. Olds advertised it as the "His and Her" shifter.

Gated shifters aren't new. But, they're still here. In fact, I drove the sister-in-laws' '04 Lexus ES this morning and the shifter has all kinds of notches and slots. But, my new '67 Cougar had a "Select-Shift" and FoMoCo said you could shift it one gear at a time, or let it work automatically. Sold it in '74.

Don't know about the others, but the Volkswagen had a major flaw. If the battery was dead, you couldn't put it in neutral for towing or anything.

GETRAG has a unit called the Automated Manual Transmission that lets you do exactly as you describe. It is either electrically or hydraulically controlled and IIRC is used in several BMW, Audi & Merc models. Here's a link for more info.

I put a His 'n' Hers shifter in a '71 Blazer I had that was a full-tilt- mud machine.What a gas that was in a mud hole,power sliding,wham it down to 1st,and romp it up through the gears,and do it all over again.I had a t-handle and a tall Hurst shift lever that put the handle so I could just lay my arm along my leg.I welded another Hurst lever to the t-case shifter stump so it was right there,too.So,I could kick it into 2wd to whip it around then grab 4wd and pull straight out like a batoughtahell!...Thanks for bringing back the memory

VW and Porsche both had a cheesy automatic. Porsche called their Sportmatic. VW's was called an Automatic Stick-Shift. My sister had one and it was no fun at all. If you were prone to resting your hand on the shift knob, it went into neutral.

Chevy had a version in the ChevyII, that was a Powerglide, but with a semi-automatic feature. Didn't stay on the option list very long.

What you want is a combo, manual /auto valve body ....this eliminates the governor overide ..even some shift kits have a "delay" when manually shifted even though they might shift hard.

Check TCI Super Street Fighter ...thats what I run it has full manual control up and down with zero governor delay and auto mode if you just put it id "D" with nice firm tire chirping shifts.

Not cheap though ..about $1500.00 for a 3 speed and over $2000.00 for a overdrive
