My Barn Find

Okay...so I know its not a 67-72 but I stumbled onto it looking at a rust bucket of a 69.

This is a 75 camper special with a 454 and a legitimate 57,000 miles. Been parked for at least 15 years.

My question is this: What needs to be done to it to get it running?

Spray the cylinders with some good lube and try to turn over the motor or just go ahead and pull the heads and put in new gaskets?

I know the tanks will have to be cleaned out and the Carb rebuilt.....thoughts?

Best thing about it is the price and no rust!!!

Re: My Barn Find

Looks like a '73-'74 model. I'd definitely drain/change all the fluids, clean/flush the tank, rebuild the carb, change the hoses and belts, and it "should" start right up if it ran when parked.

Re: My Barn Find

Has a 73/74 grille, also 73/74 park lights, has a drip molding, so I'm guessing it's actually a '74. Awesome find, anxious to see what it looks like after a bath.

When you said it had been parked for a while you weren't kidding! You can't even see through the windows! A little cleaning and it will look great! Can't wait to see more pictures

Re: My Barn Find

My 85 sat for 15 years in hot Arizona sun, For under 1k I got it back on the road and still running strong.

Here is what I did to mine. It was very simple.

Get a fire extingusher.

Pull carb off, soaked in a bucket of gasoline and changed out all the gaskets and the small parts that came with kit.

Take your fuel line loose going into the fuel pump and run some hose from the line going to the fuel pump into a container you want to fill with bad gasoline.

If you have compressed air grab a blow gun and wrap a rag around the end and stick it into your fuel filler. Pressurize the fuel tank and the gas flows out of the lines into the container, this takes a while.

Put on your rebuilt carb and change your fuel pump, the diaphram is most likely dried up and bad in your fuel pump so save the trouble and just change it.

Instead of using the metal line going from the fuel pump to carb just get some nipple fittings and run a rubber hose from the fuel pump to carb and put a clear plastic filter in. It will get plugged with crap often and after a while clears out, the plastic filter is just easyer to change and dignose fuel problems.

Change your engine oil and filter and add half a bottle of sea foam. Fill the tank with fresh gas and add the rest of your sea foam to that.

Pull your plugs and squirt some Marvels Mystery oil into your cylinder walls. Replace with properly gaped plugs.

Change out your wires, cap and rotor.

crank your motor without starting to slowly build oil pressure and evently let it start and idle. for a while, watch your temp guage.

If it runs decent move onto the cooling system and oils in your Trans, transfer case and differentials. If it does not run good pull your valve covers and check all your push rods. My engine had stuck valves that broke the push rods.

On top of all that I replaced: water pump, Radiator, hoses, belts, and the power steering pump.

The owner was getting older and the truck had some minor problem so they just parked it and started working on it...just never finished.

Hopefully the engine is still okay....waiting on title.
