Crate Engines

I was looking for a new crate 350 engine for my 72 C-10. I came across a company called phoenix engine that has really good pricing. Has anyone ever dealt with this company? I see mixed reviews when I google them. Anyone know any credible crate engine companies?

Re: Crate Engines

What kind of hp do you want? Stock, mild, or wild?

Re: Crate Engines

looking for something mild around 330-350hp. Phoenix engine sells a 330hp for around $2900 turn key. I'm a little shocked by the price I didn't think you could get a turn key engine that cheap.

Re: Crate Engines

What do you need or want? Turn key or long block. Warranty? When looking keep in mind that turn key means different things to different builders.

Re: Crate Engines

for a 330hp engine I'd look at local shops(machine shops)
for 2900.00 you can get a local built engine and know what your getting..
or go to a local chevy dealer..
cause an all new gm crate is 2800.00 for the 350ho (330hp)

I've bought from them and would recommend them, but YearOne has a 400+hp 400+ftlb motor for $3200 shipped. It comes dyno'd. I have one in my garage waiting to go in.

Re: Crate Engines

also, the Smeding motor does not come dyno'd or broken in, if you are concerned about that.

Re: Crate Engines

Get a Goodwrench 350 from your GM dealer 260hp for $1500.00 or less and comes with a warranty also. They are decent motors put a different cam in it and some vortec heads get compression up.

Re: Crate Engines

The $2800 crate engine from chevy is 330 HP. In a long block form. I own one of those, and LOVE it. When you get it dressed, it is more like $3600 or so. Least that is what I told my wife! That engine idles PERFECT!! smooth as butter, pulls great!

Re: Crate Engines

My Smeding motor just arrived this afternoon ... and it does come dyno'd and run in. This past summer they had some special models that weren't dyno'd or broken in, and they currently seem to be out of the 350 ci business. Mine is their new 383 Touring EFI It was advertised at 370 hp and 430 torque, but actually came in at 419 hp and 465.3 torque, according to the dyno sheet. And the motor is beautiful!! Can't wait to get it all buttoned up. 3 year, unlimited mileage warranty. The neat thing was they had introductory pricing on this efi motor right now.

The prices are on the Smeding site ... http://smedingperformance.com/chevy3...ouringEFI.html

I still got it at the introductory price ... add $200 for shipping.

It's a bunch of $$$, but when you add on the aluminum heads, World Products intake, and the Accel efi system (DFI Thruster) it's pretty fairly priced, I think.

dressing it doesn't cost much IF the truck has a v8 now, as you can use the parts off the old, but the intake, if this one has vortec heads,
so 3k will get you the all new parts engine..

if he's going from a 6 then it'll cost more as he'll need brackets for the alt/power stear/etc

click the link I gave in the post above, sd always is cheaper than pace..
then print the one you want out. and go to your local(big) chevy dealer
and ask um if they can get it, and for that price,, they can and will. and will still be making money..
I wanted the 454ho it was listed at 5300.00 locally untill I went to the big dealer with the sd page of the engine for 4600.oo
they beat it and out the door for 4200.00
yes I have to pay sales tax . but it still was less than the 4600.oo and way less than the list of 5300.oo
good luck..
dealers parts dept. want to make money and will help you. the + is they will also help when you need other parts to..
the dealer I bought from made 400.oo for doing nothing but ordering the engine, and 10 minutes to help load it into my el camino

Re: Crate Engines

just remember, these engines are flat tappet cams..
you MUST use napa or comp cams break in additive or break in oil. as todays oil doesn't have enough zinc in it anymore..
you also should use the additive for every oil change...with normal oil after the break in..
read up on cam break in.. you must follow the steps and use the correct oil. or you'll chance a flattened lobe..
it's easy to break in the cam.. but helps to have friends around to watch for leaks as your working the engine rpm and another watching a gauges..
comp cams has a nice write up on this

Did this come with any kind of engine management system? Thinking about going this route also and was wondering what is requred to get this to work in these older trucks.
