Small Block Serpentine
Anybody know if a newer serpentine setup off a late model truck will work on my 84 chevy c10? I dont have AC, just P/S and alternator.
I think this would be a good budget alternative. Where would be the best place to find these? Other than the junk yard.... |

^^^^^What he said ^^^^^^
Mine came off of a late model (93) motor. Got the whole thing from the JY including AC compressor, PS pump, and alt for 100.00.

Re: Small Block Serpentine
Dont forget that you need a reverse rotation water pump as well...

Re: Small Block Serpentine
You can buy the whole set-up brand new but it is $$$$$. Summit sells them and your local dealer can order them too.
Important thing is to check if your heads and manifold have the bolt provisions. When you get the JY parts, don't forget the exhaust manifold spacer the PS pump supports to. Also get the water neck to launch your radiator hose at a higher angle. There are also smog delete pulleys like the AC delete pulleys to fill in that space. Personally, I kind of liked the 87 & 88 pulley system that attaches to a stell shell that bolts to the front of the engine....pretty straightforward and looks good. |

Re: Small Block Serpentine
Can you get the delete pulleys from the dealer? If I use the power steering will it work with my current steering box?

the early 90's style pickups should work also the systems out of a g-van should work too.

Re: Small Block Serpentine
Yes, the dealer can order the delete pulley's.
The newer power steering pump is fine with your old steering box.....just have to check the hoses I believe. Newer pumps and hoses are metric while older ones are standard. There are adapters for the fittings. Your 84 should be close to the change to metric. |

Re: Small Block Serpentine
When using a newer pump on an older truck you dont have to buy anything. Theres no need to change lines. On the back of the pump theres a nut that the Pressure line actually screws into. remove it, its the pressure valve for the pump. Swap Yours from the old pump into the new pump and your lines and fittings will all hook right up. Be careful when your pulling the valve out. Theres a spring behind it and it will come flying out at you. 5 minute thing

Re: Small Block Serpentine
I m running a serpentine set up off a 92 camaro.Works like a charm.I just gutted the air pump and use it as an idler pulley. They do sell delete pulleys for it also.If im not mistaken the camaro set up has the a/c comp and alternator sitting a little lower then the truck set ups which to me it looks better.

Re: Small Block Serpentine
87-89 have a big steel horseshoe bracket that bolts up and all the crap bolts to it. My 88 has it, and it's kinda hard to find the a/c bypass, some say it works some say no, but there was a factory non a/c option, and then my truck has smog too, so not only cars had smog pumps alot of trucks do too, I just remove it and ran a shorter belt.
I think the 4.3 in fullsize trucks, safari and astro vans, and s-10's all work on small block v8's. then of course 305 and 350 trucks and cars. I can post pics if you want, ebay sells the big steel bracket and other places.

Re: Small Block Serpentine
'87-'88 full size trucks didn't have serpentine set ups, they had a ribbed belt and a v belt.
serpentine - adj: resembling a serpent in form Even the newer small block serp set ups will work on the older blocks, the older blocks have 2 less holes but there is still plenty of support. Some have even successfully modified and used the small block serp's on the big blocks. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Small Block Serpentine
yea the belt says v ribbed and is 6 rib but to me that's serpetine, wife's 2000 monte carlo has same thing, so how's there any difference?
my belt is like the above, and the pulley setup and belt routing is about identical minus the one idler under the a/c and mine having a huge steel u shaped bracket instead of 2 aluminum ones.

Re: Small Block Serpentine
Are you talking about the 88-up C series (OBS) trucks?
'87-'88 square bodies have a ribbed belt that is routed like a v-belt I believe '89 was the first year of serp in the squares, I'm unsure if '88 C series (OBS) had a serp belt. Sorry I didn't specify..... Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Small Block Serpentine
sorry too man, forgot to mention it was newer 88-98 style, my 88 has that big horseshoe bracket that uses a serp, belt, it says v riubbed on the belt package but it routes like above.
I thought the square bodies with tbi like 87-91's would have the same thing. I know what you are talking about though, I've seen it, flat belt and as you said adjusts and routes same as v belts.

Re: Small Block Serpentine
88 first year of the new body style, and 89 has the same steel horseshoe bracket for serp. setups, then it changed to alum. ones like above
pics... then you can remove the a/c portion... mine was missing that idler on bottom of the a/c part, and I cut the lower left or ps part off mine where the smog pump bolts to, but there's a small bracket for the tensioner that bolts up in place of the a/c part when you remove the a/c. The other difference is a/c is 6 rib, and non a/c is 4 rib.

Re: Small Block Serpentine
Here is a setup from a 2006 4.3L. everything bolts up except for my '78 block having the extra water pump hole, and one of the passenger bolt holes goes off into space on my 487 heads.
Edit, Forgot. Tall valve covers hit the AC compressor.
