LS Swap guys! What did you do for a speedo?

I may have asked before but please tell me what you all did with your speedo in the swap, CABLE-X? Electronic speedo?

If you have an electronic speedo, tell me what brand and how you got it hooked up please.

Thanks

gps unit on suction cup mount. i figure its accurate enough for most cruising but you can save the dash space (and expense of either a digi or conversion box) for other gauges.

My laptop or my single borad computer/touch screen and an HP tuners cable. Gives a lot more than just speedo.

nope. PO put the sbc in my truck but never got the speedo cable or anything hooked up. I just use the little "stick anywhere" suction cup and my tomtom. They even have a firmware hack/mod that allows you to use it just as a big speedo. Hell, a used tomtom1 goes for like $70; cheaper than a speedo.

Re: LS Swap guys! What did you do for a speedo?

I am going with the Auto Meter programmable speedo, but it's not running yet. Check out my build thread. I will post info on it once I get it running.

I went with Classic Instruments. Its electrical, controlled by the pcm along with the Tach.

Re: LS Swap guys! What did you do for a speedo?

I use a CableX box mounted just below the fuse box and a short cable they made up for me. The setup works good but it is still a mechanical speedo.

But what I really use for driving is a scan gage, velcroed just under the speedo. You can set it dead accurate with a GPS and know exactly how fast you are going. (It also displays any 4 quantities that are on the serial bus, I usually run speed, RPM, Fuel level, and water temp.)

http://www.scangauge.com/products/

I also has all the trip functions, MPG functions, you can even make up new gages.

Re: LS Swap guys! What did you do for a speedo?

I used a factory 90-91...maybe 89 suburban cluster... had an electronic speedo. in a nutshell repin the cluster pigtail, and to make the speedo work its a power, ground and vss (wire comming from pcm) Those are all apart of the PC board on the cluster. I think I have an extra one in the garage... i wont know untill saturday for sure.

Re: LS Swap guys! What did you do for a speedo?

I went the not so cheap route Dakota digital gauges specifically for 67-72s. Hooked it up to the speedometer pulse wire from the pcm, set the control for the speedo to "learn" mode and drove a measured mile.

Re: LS Swap guys! What did you do for a speedo?

I plan to use a set a lavorsi CAN signal gages since they will plug directly to my ECM.

http://www.livorsi.com/catalog.htm

For the guy who posted about using his GPS as a speedo, Livorisi offers a GPS speedometer

Re: LS Swap guys! What did you do for a speedo?

ouch EXPENSIVE^^^

I do like the idea of the scanguageII tho. I had the regular Aeroforce Scangauge in my SRT4 and it was great.

Maybe i will lose the GPS for a scangauge this xmas.

Mine uses the PCM signal and then into a "Speedometer Calibration Module" it takes the 4000 pulse per mile signal and converts it to a signal the speedo can read. (16000ppm) I believe the Autometer speedo runs off of the VSS, but im not sure

Re: LS Swap guys! What did you do for a speedo?

Here is a pic of my setup. All of the stock gages work except you can see that the temp gage is wrong. I am determined to get it to work with the late model sender, but I have not beat it yet.

The scan gage is showing speed, rpm, fuel level, and my average mpg for the trip to work this morning. The mpg is calibrated in the scan gage to give the accurate value.
