is my 67 a 66? lol
i have a 67 gmc custom that i have had for a couple of weeks now and i have been looking at it and im wondering if it was an early built 67? . At first i didnt believe that but i got to looking at it and noticed that it has the slave cylinder power steering set up. My truck originally had the 305 v6 with a granny 4 speed and a DANA 60 (in a half ton). i dont kno if my truck was a special ordered truck or what? What do u guys think ??? like to know more about it

Is the serial portion of the VIN low (numerically)?
That would certainly be another clue and could substantiate (or refute) your theory. High VIN = later in the model year. K

'67 had the slave cylinder power steering, at least my '67 Chevy did.

Slave-cylinder power steering was the "normal" way of assisting steering efforts. Ford used it on the Mustang from the git-go. My '60 Impala had it. I always hated having to put a leaky one on the rack and get under it to do an oil change. But, it beat no power steering at all...and actually worked very well. It just added weight to the chassis.

My 67 had that too. I'd run it if it works and doesn't leak and swap to the later style box and linkage if there were problems with the slave. They work good when they work but tend to leak as Chevloray mentioned and are a royal pain to rebuild and get right. I'd only rebuild one and put it back on if the truck had to be a perfect 100 point restoration to be shown as a restored truck. Otherwise swap to the later box and forget fighting leaks.

v 6 and 4 speed... typical GMC. Dana rear... not too uncommon. Power steering, not very common at all, even less common to find one that doesn't leak.
The badges on the fenders, if they are clean, then they are worth a bit. |
