I want to change the transmission fluid in my 1994 GMC Pickup. It has the 4l60e. Do I have to drop the transmission cross member? It appears to be in the way of the bolts at the back end of the pan. If so what are the torque specs on the 4 bolts that hold the member in and the one that hold the transmission onto the crossmember? I see no other way to get all the bolts out easily. I have never done a fluid change myself on this truck.
Help if you can...I really want to get this done today before I go out of town tomorrow. Thanks in advance. Clay |

Re: Need an answer fast please help.
ive always pulled the 4 bolts and slide the crossmember back about 4 inches. it doesnt take long at all. I personally just think its easier then trying to get a small ratchet in there.
I dont know the torque specs i just always tighten up, if i had to guess around 50 ft lbs |

Thanks guys for the answers. I ended up taking the 4 bolts out and the two that mount the rubber to the transmission so I could slide it back. It was tricky being so old and corroded up. I have the pan off now. I think I will torque the 4 cross member bolts to 55ft/lbs....kinda like my Jeep TJ skid plate bolts. The transmission one will be way less than that I know.
I guess we have to just be careful and not overtighten anything. The pan bolts will be my bigger fear...what are they like 12ft/lbs maybe....not tight at all. Should a guy use gasket glue on the new pan gasket or just carefully put it all back up in there. I am probably the most paranoid and OCD about doing things. I am surprised I even tried to do this...hahahaha. Thanks again guys! Take care. |

Pull the bolts and slide the cross member back like the member above said.
