Question what kind of crap rearend work is this?

i was comealongin the 67 i'm working on, for my wife, on the trailer to haul to my dads. Ready to drop the motor i built in it and saw this. It seems the po before the po (i knew the last one) put a leaf spring adapted to a coil spring rearend in the truck when they did the five lug conversion. MY problem is look at the work!!!!!! welds are horrible i'm not the best but dang this looks like a mess any thoughts? it looks worse in person

looks like that was done with a blow torch...looks about normal when thats what you got to use..try grinding it down and then filling in the surface and spray it with some frame paint..world of diffrence

Re: what kind of crap rearend work is this?

you might want to spend some time checking things out real good prior to putting a motor in it

Re: what kind of crap rearend work is this?

What a mess. I wouldn't even think of trying to keep that rear end. Too much work. find the right one reasonable and replace it.

I'll tell ya a story about my '68. I bought it when I was 15, before I knew much of anything. But I soon learned that my rear end looked different than any GM rear end I had seen. It kinda looked like a Chevy car rear from the early 60's because it had a dropout 3rd member with a welded round rear cover. But it wasn't. After scraping around on it- I found a Mopar pentastar in the casting. It was a friggin Mopar rear end! With 6 bolt axles. I thought how could that be? I knew enough to know that Mopar didn't have a 6 bolt pattern the same as GM... so how did they do it? After I yanked it to put a Chevy 12 bolt in, I tore it apart to find out. It had GM brakes, backing plates and tube ends (welded on). And here is the good part- they cut the Mopar axle shafts right by the hub flange, AND WELDED ON GM FLANGES!!!

Talking Re: what kind of crap rearend work is this?

It very well could have been a farm or similar use truck back in the day. Many times things were fixed on the fly, not to have too much down time for the truck. Not like today when these trucks are highly sought after for toys and not work trucks. Sometimes its hard to remember that we have it so lucky today with affordable tig/mig welders and the internet for sourcing the right parts. Back in the day if you had a stick welder and a junkyard within hours drive you might get it fixed...

Maybe what Im trying to say is just be glad you have the skills and the desire to fix it right and not nessarly bash what else someone had to do to get their truck back on the road!

Re: what kind of crap rearend work is this?

Doesn't look that bad.....some people just weld with there eyes closed for safety.

Looks like the only piece of round stock he had for that panhard bar is that old 30 footer laying out back! lol

That really needs to come off the center of the diff. Seems like it would affect the articulation of that coil rear end.

Buy a Super Track Bar from Early Classic Enterprises and take that one off.
Super easy to install and adjust.

Re: what kind of crap rearend work is this?

I would definitely build a new panhard bar. There's nothing wrong with it being long like that....less side to side movement through out the suspension travel. I would also suggest checking the other welds, as well as dimensions side to side and the pinion angle.

Re: what kind of crap rearend work is this?

if the mounts are welded on too, then a new panhard bar is not gonna fix it all, it needs to be checked, welds and angles

Re: what kind of crap rearend work is this?

those welds are more than likely fine,, just not pretty,
redo if you feel you need to.. but your looking as welds that have been there a long time, good luck..
remember pretty welds don't always = good strong welds

Re: what kind of crap rearend work is this?

I agree with stich626, but you saw it and we really can't see the welds that well in the photos. One thing to think about is the first thing they teach ya when taking the test to be an AWS Certified Welding Inspector is "you can't bust ugly".

Wire wheel the crud off and then check it out closer. Then take a grinding wheel and grind the welds a bit. If you don't see any slag entrapment in the weld filler metal, and there isn't excessive cold lapping or undercut then it isn't as bad ass it first appears.

Maybe post up some additional photos at that point?

You might want to check the U-bolts down in side the pockets to see how much they rusted. Mine looked pretty good up top but they were less than half the diameter where you couldn't see them.

Re: what kind of crap rearend work is this?

A superbar kit will fix you right up. It will give your panhard bar a better angle and doesn't require welding it in place. Just cut the bracket off that has been welded to your rear end because you will not need it. I wiuld also look into a shock relocation kit if I were you. The shock look like they are layed down too much. (A result of lowering) WES
