Strange V.I.N. Number
I recently bought a 1972 Chevy c/10 and today I wrote down the V.I.N. number to see if I could identify anything about the truck on the internet. I found some decoders, but my number wouldn't fit in any of them. If anyone here could help me, that would be cool. My V.I.N. number is CCE142Z114832. Thanks!

Re: Strange V.I.N. Number
Hello,
I just bought my first truck and I am wondering how to figure out the VIN info on my own. Is there a website or thread that explains it? Thanks in advance! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Strange V.I.N. Number
its cool... in reality, most of the 67 - 72 vin decodors on the web are wrong anyways. GM even had one on one of there pages at one time that was wrong. it looked like they based it off of LMC's page, which was wrong for well over 10 years.

Re: Strange V.I.N. Number
I had a hard time with mine too. (CS138A128304) Model # on plate in glove box is CS10703 or 20703, not sure since 1st # is scratched off)
Was pretty sure what it meant, but wanted to decode it right. Just something ya gotta do when restoring an oldie I guess. My problem was I couldn't find out what the 3 in mine meant, when i found a source that did list the 3 it always used the 13 digit VIN. This is what I've deduced: C - Convential cab S - 6 cyl 1 - 1/2 ton 3 - Cab & chassis (no bed) (per GM factory servie manual) 8 - 1968 A - Atlanta last - seq # |

Re: Strange V.I.N. Number
C is for C-series truck,in other words 2wd.A 4wd would start with K,a StepVan is P,and vans are G.In '72 a C was added in front for Chevys and a T for GMCs

Re: Strange V.I.N. Number
Hello everyone. Here's another thats got me confused. I seen somewhere on this site that Canadian VIN's are different but it can't be by that much. I have a 1968 GMC 930 1 Ton to restore.
13 digit VIN is C9E33811xxxxx C - indicates Chev doesn't it? Shouldn't it be T? Did someone change my body panels?? 9 - Is this cab/chassis type? I can't find a reference for the # 9. E - Engine code, V8 gas seems to be correct. 3 - Series, I believe 3 is correct for 1 ton. 3 - Body type, 3 should be correct for chassis cab. 8 - Model year, 1968 is correct. 1 - Plant code, Oshawa Ont. should be correct. 1xxxxx - Production #. I haven't seen a vin decoder for '68 that fits this pattern, especially the 1st 2 digits C9, and the fact that I have a 13 digit code when 12 seems to be the norm. Any help out there? |
