Re: looking at 2001 duramax

Depends on miles, options and condition. Ive seen them anywhere from $10000 to $20000. The 01, 02, and early 03 with the LB7 did have injector problems. Some pickups didnt but alot did. They can fill the crankcase with diesel and or will have a rich, hazy exhaust at idle. A gm dealer could tell you if they have been replaced or not. Some people have had more than one set put in but I think if its not chipped and well maintained that it would be ok. Most people run an additive with the fuel or even 2 stroke oil since the ULSD lost some lube characteristics and things are fine for them. I hope this doesnt change your mind, just letting you know. They are a fine and powerful engine in a comfortable truck. Once you have one you wont regret it! Good luck shopping!

Re: looking at 2001 duramax

As an owner of a 2001 Duramax I can tell you that - Yes - they do have known injector problems. There was a special 7 year/200,000 warranty that was applied because of this. I bought my truck in 2006 w/ 65K miles on it. All 8 injectors were changed under warranty just before I got it. The truck has 148K miles on it now. I've had no problems at all. I run 4-6 ounces of Amsoil Diesel Fuel concentrate in each tank to help add lubricity to the ULSD fuel.
As stated in the previous post a dealer can give you the warranty history to see if they have been replaced. Additionally you should take it to the dealer BEFORE you buy it and have them check the rates on both the injector balance and fuel return rates. They have established parameters that will show if the injectors are performing in spec or not. Often this test will show a red flag before any Fuel is noticed in the crankcase or white smoke is noticed at idle. Hope this helps! I love my Duramax!!!

Oh - Another great thing about the 2001 Duramax - No emission equipment! No EGR, No DPF, I average about 21MPG unloaded on the highway!
