Rear End Identification

I just bought this truck and it will be my first restoration/ customization. I was told the rear end was a ford 9" but i am not sure. Can anyone identify it from the pic, i am not sure how old it is either.

Re: Rear End Identification

I am not the best expert when it comes to Rear Ends, but I believe this is a Ford 8". The best way to figure it out is there should be a casting number on the top left corner of the center and this tell us for sure what this unit is. I cannot read it from the picture you posted so if you could post it or Google that Casting number you will find out for sure.

Re: Rear End Identification

I believe if you CANNOT put a socket on one or both of the bottom nuts it IS a 9 inch. You have to use a wrench to do it. If you CAN get a socket on them--It is an 8 inch. Do not take this as gospel---But I seem to remember it as correct.

Re: Rear End Identification

Looks like a 9" to me also, take a look at my build thread on the past page and I have a few pictures that I posted of our 9".

Re: Rear End Identification

the bottom left 2 nuts are fully accessible with a socket it looks like it could be stamped B4 or even SB4 OR 5B4 in the left top area
