LED Instrument Bulbs?

Soon I will be ripping out my dash and I was thinking that I could replace my old burned out bulbs with some new LED ones? Hopefully they just go into place where the old bulbs were without having to rewire anything....I would just like some brighter lights than factory and because LEDs look more blue than yellow (and the other lights in the cab will have a soft blue glow). I can't seem to find any anywhere (I think I'm not looking in the right place?) but has anyone else tried this before? and what did you use?
Thanks

Re: LED Instrument Bulbs?

Went through the same thing in April when I had the guage cluster out for an overhaul. Here's that thread and a couple of other links in it. Started out looking for led's for the cab lights and didn't like the look. But in the dash, perfect for my older eyes!

You are correct about the dim oem lights. This is an improvement. Hope this helps.

Neat thread and thanks for showing me! Glad someone else had problems with the old lights cause I didn't want to be the only one So for your whole gauge you used 5? Then another for the heater control (that I want to do). So there is a light for every gauge? (sorry never opened one of these style trucks up before ) So if I have a clock in mine I would need 7 lights all together?
Thanks

Re: LED Instrument Bulbs?

Originally I purchased 6 of those bulbs for the cab lights, one to have as a spare. Used 5 in the dash and eventually the 6th one goes to the heater light which I managed to forget about until I had it back together.

When you take it apart just look for the light bulbs you have and replace those. Do take care when unplugging the cluster from the harness and remember it won't come out unless you do. Not a big deal, just an important detail for anyone thinking it will "just pull out" after the screws are out.

Had that guage cluster apart so many times for this and that and the other at that time I was just glad to have it all working and lighted up.

I'd buy 7, maybe 8 to have a spare, and use what you need. Nothing to taking it apart. I had it down to about 5 minutes apart or back together. Phillip screw driver and either a nut driver or small socket. Probably the easiest thing I've done looking back at where I've been so far.

Good Luck!

Re: LED Instrument Bulbs?

I wrapped a 48" long L.E.D. strip and four 6" long L.E.D. strips inside the back side of the front cover of my cluster along with white faced overlays to get the look I wanted.

I got all my L.E.D.'s from www.v-leds.com

Re: LED Instrument Bulbs?

I've got green ones in the dash of the 30 to compliment the factory green interior. I got them from Vleds.

Caution, they are a diode, and will only work in one direction. Plug the cluster in and check them before you put it all back together. If they don't work, pull it out and turn it 180 degrees and check again.

That looks really nice! Me though I think that would be a big distraction for me

did you hookup to the power originally for the dash lights or did you run new power wires?
