rear end Qs??

Picked up a rear end core to build up today, started to strip everything down.....hit a hangup. When I went to remove the axles, I took out the lock screw but the cross shaft will not come out of the carrier. It's a stock Chevy open diff., anyone have any ideas on what could be holding it up or am I completely missing something??

Also anyone know of a 12 bolt truck specific rear end rebuild guide, I have a couple generic type things, but nothing for just the 12 bolt Thanks

The lock screw has a smooth end on it (no threads), approx 1 1/2" long..........did it all come out?

yeah, the whole thing came out. can the cross shaft go in/out on either end of the carrier? it will wiggle front/back but not left/right (if it was installed in a truck)

double check this. The last one I had trouble with was 3/4" shorter than it should have been. The last 3/4" was still in the pin and kept it from moving more than a little bit in or out. If I had known it was in there I would have tried a magnet before I used a 2 pound hammer and a big punch. I did get it busted out of there without mashing my hand in the process.

Same here

Also on my 70 the pin will only come out 1 way (I'm serious).This is the only 1 I have that is like that

Sometimes the pin varnish's up, and can be a bit tight to remove.
I'm working on a 12 bolt now that was that way, just take your time and try to clean around the pin or use brake cleaner to help
brakeup the varnish. Good luck

thanks for all the help, I looked closer at the lock screw and it does look like some of it broke off. how far into the cross shaft does the lock screw go? now i just need to find a small enough magnet or something to dig it out of the carrier.....or just bust out the BFH to pound the cross-shaft out

Well, the hole goes all the way through the cross pin.......i havent measured the depth, but beleive the retainer bolt/pin also goes into the carrier on the other side. They can be a pain.....goood luck,crazyL

Somebody sells a tool now for getting this out. Check with Randy's Ring and Pinion. Broken shaft screws are a PITA.

if its not the bolt broke off check for a groove where the spider gears wear, makes a notch that holds the pin from sliding out
