Pulley help please - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I an converting my 68 to power steering. After installing the add-on crank pulley and the pump I noticed the pulley on the pump was bent. I bought a replacement at a local truck parts place today and get home to find out it isn't the same one? I thought all keyed single groove pulleys were the same? Do I have the correct setup and am I missing something? The new pulley is on the left and the bent is on the right.

There are a bunch of different ones out there. It's kind of hit or miss finding one that'll work. Did the bent one line up with the crank pulley?

The bent one did line up great but wobbled when I hand spun it. The new one is supposed to be correct for a non AC truck. When I return it I will let the parts place know it isn't correct. They did have one for AC that has a double groove but I figured I didn't need that one.

My AC truck had a single groove PS pump pulley FWIW. It's good you have the old pulley to match up with. Might want to keep an eye on the Parts section of the Board. Good luck.

Will the belt line with the new pulley , t he waterpump pulley....& sit right tween the space in between the 2 pulleys? if you answer that ? yes, You may have the wrong pulley on the bottom. I think I have a set that goes back to back on the crank pulleys.....if it will work, I will send em to you for the shipping. Let me know, I have to do a little digging

I was thinking the same thing. It looks the groove would line up in between the two pulleys on the crank. If you have a pic of what you have can you send it to me? Thanks! This is driving me crazy!

Damn, I spaced on that one....it dont run the same belt for the steering pump. At any rate, I have some of the old pulleys, & will help if i can

I have an 71 A/C truck. My crank has 3 and the P/S is running on the middle one with a short belt alone

Unfortunately the engine is currently out of the truck. But it is like yours in that ther are 2 actual pulleys that are stacked on the crank. The inside is a single like yours but the outside is a double with a pulley where you have a gap.

I do have an early crank pulley with 2 grooves back to back,(the back 1/2 of a 2 pc,3 groove pulley) & it looks like it will set the belt right tween your 2 pulleys. I am not setup to help with pics, but if you think it will work , its yours for what it cost to send it. Needs some cleanup & paint.....& I need ideas on the cheapest way to ship

Normally the 2nd grove is for AC, and the 3rd is PS. Wonder if you didn't get one for a long water pump. Looks like a short one on your engine.

When I was looking for pulleys I had a hard time finding one that got the belts aligned.
All I had the factory water pump pulley a crank pulley and heard everything from it's going to impossible to find, to its best if you just get everything off a complete truck!
(I had all my pulleys powder coated and wasn't going to start all over just for one pulley).

I found this guy and he had every style to choose from and was able to provide me with measurements to help me get the one I needed.
So you might want to contact Jim Berther at bigblockjim454@cox.net as he sells tons of used power steering components & pulleys.

You'll want to take some good measurements and I seen this post and really liked his method. I did mine different, but required more attention to ensure good accuracy (I'm sure I posted something here about it).

You might also try cleaning up the bent one.Most have a part # stamped into them.If you have the # half the battle is won.
