hello
im a 16 year old who is new at this,

and i just inherited a 1974 chevy C20 custom deluxe

its in great shape with a strong running 350

im wondering the up and down sides of strait piping this beast and how to go about it ..?


im also wondering if anyone has any ideas for mods to make it better (sound, mpg's, power etc.) .... anything not to expensive or hard to put in http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/i...lies/chevy.gif

from my experience (18 years old) if ur looking for good gas mileage these arnt the best for them but best way is to me keep it stock and keep ur foot out of it and any pics?

i got a 305 in mine ( stock except rv cam ) with long headers with 3and a half foot pipe and flow master 44s and its not all to loud but i do get looks sometimes

well straight pipes are loud and cheap, but performance exhausts are better in the long run. i think they sound better too. i have 40 series flowmasters on mine and it sounds amazing but it aint real cheap. the only thing that i know of thats bad with straight piping is worse on gas, and theres no backflow. most folks think that backflow is bad but you need a little bit to get the most power.
the flowmasters cost me about 200 plus labor to put them on and i have dual exhaust

i was meaning that the pipe is 3and a half foot long but the pipe is 2and a half in diamiter

i like my dad working for a auto shop, all it cost me was the cost for the collectors and gaskets and time

Straight pipes are obnoxious, you can be ticketed and people will hate you for driving by their house. Its not practical for a daily driven vehicle.

the fuel escapes quicker without a muffler i dont know how much though. its worth it just for the sound if you ask me

no straight pipes.. not legal in most areas, very obnoxious and your stock motor needs SOME back pressure to retain volumetric efficiency.put some descent mufflers on it .

I had straights for a week. and i quivered each time i passed a cop in town. I found for better mileage and power go for a glasspack. you can pick one up at advanced auto for 19.99 any size. I went with a 3 1/2 foot one because i wanted to fill the gap of my old muffler.

I live on a busy road, and have come to HATE people with straight pipes. It doesn't sound good on a stock engine, just LOUD.

I have straights and I HATE it, they were on there when I bought it and just haven't had the cash to weld up the 40 Flowmasters that have been ridin in the bed since a week after I got the truck.

down side of straight pipes? there loud as hell and sound terrible. headers, 2 1/2" duals and flowmasters the way to go

You'll like straight pipes for about a week because you can raise hell when you pull in to your school but the downside is if you have to sneak out of your house to go drinkin with your buddies it won't be good.(don't ask how I know) On a serious note, straight pipes sound terrible especially if you have manifolds and you will lose a little power.
