Another 292 power steering thread

I just spent the last hour looking through every single state and town in craigslist for a 292 with power steering. I was wondering if the newer engines ( from the 80's and the crate motors) were the "integral" heads or "non-integral" heads, or how do you tell those two apart? Anyway here are all of the trucks or engines currently for sale that have power steering on/with their 292's.

http://eastidaho.craigslist.org/cto/2014288111.html

http://fortwayne.craigslist.org/pts/1984227895.html ***** would this work?

http://desmoines.craigslist.org/cto/2021212091.html

http://springfield.craigslist.org/pts/1984307377.html

http://lincoln.craigslist.org/cto/1993012473.html

http://eastnc.craigslist.org/cto/2021552652.html

http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/cto/2020912166.html

http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/cto/2022946016.html

http://burlington.craigslist.org/cto/2022711981.html

- those last two were pretty interesting trucks and the last one would be too nice to part out.

*I posted this thread twice hoping it would get twice the traffic.

Re: Another 292 power steering thread

thats quite a thorough search that you did. I hope that you didnt just create some competition for yourself. I have a 292 power steering setup of one of my trucks. They are indeed hard to find, especially for the earlier style motor w/o the integrated head. basically, any engine made late 70's and on will most likely have the integrated head. i would skip over those ones. i know many people here on the forum that have made their own brackets. it dont think it would be all that difficult, then again, im not a welder/fabricator.

Re: Another 292 power steering thread

I would make the guy in rochester a good price for his power strg setup and see what he says
he still has a motor to sell and won't have to ask as much then for the unit
the worst that he can say is no

Re: Another 292 power steering thread

I contacted this guy http://springfield.craigslist.org/pts/1984307377.html offered him $250 for the power steering assembly, I thought it was fair for because the last one on ebay went for $400

Check out salvage yards for old van bodied[gruman, etc] for the p/s set ups.I worked at a bakery in the early 90's and all of the chevy's had 292's with p/s.

I hope that he took your offer as he more than likely wouldn't have gotten that for the eng and all

Re: Another 292 power steering thread

Don't forget you have other options than one of the "stock" setups. On my 292 I am going to use a GM Type II pump, mounted low below the alternator, even though this will mean I will have to fab some mounting brackets. Using it you even have the option of using a remote reservoir.

The integral head has the intake manifold made as part of the head casting. There is no separate removable manifold. These started around 1975 on 250 engines, but I have not yet found a 292 of any year with one.

This design was not a success for GM as they are prone to cracking. Fortunately, the non-integral head is a straight-across swap on any engine that has one, so don't disqualify an otherwise-good engine if you are looking for one to buy.

Re: Another 292 power steering thread

I feel like a stock power steering set-up would be the easiest to put on, im just trying to think of a way to get one of these assemblies. Should I buy a truck and part it out? Does anyone here that is close to one of these trucks want to do that? does someone want a project truck but not the 292? As far as looking in salvage yards, i'm not sure where any are in centre county, PA I went to one but the I wasent allowed to walk the yard but it didn't matter, the owner said they didnt have any trucks in the yard.

I know that's what he paid for it. I saw it on his truck. Maybe he wanted to sell it before he put it on. I would give him $400. In my dreams.

Sounds like a good deal.
I'm still looking for a set of 292 PS brackets myself.

Re: Another 292 power steering thread

No it was off a truck that the owner was parting out, so no chrome but still a 292 power steering assembly for only $150 works for me.

That's a real good price compared to what I've seen others go for. Post up some pics when you get it all installed.
