47 1/2 ton gas tank placement

I bought a 47 a couple weeks ago and it looks like the previous owner relocated the tank from under the bed to in back of the seat. This appears to be the reason the seat doesn't move back all the way. My question is should the tank be under the bed and if so where did the filler tube come out of? Any reason someone would do this? Safer there?

The gas tanks were behind the seats back then. The filler should be on the passenger side of the truck. Some people relocate them under the bed.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Re: 47 1/2 ton gas tank placement

On a '47 the tank was on the passenger frame rail under the bed and in front of the rear axle. The filler neck came out of box side just below the bed floor. GM started putting gas tanks in the cab in '49. There is a guy on the board building a '48 and his build thread has pics of the filler neck location. I also have a '48, but it's on an S10 chassis, so I'm flipping the filler next to the driver's side where the S10 tank is located.

There are plenty of builds on here that can show you how to put the tank under the bed. I am relocating mine as well.

Ok, so if this one has the filler on the driver's side, does that mean it's not stock?

Got me. Is there a difference between 3/4 ton and 1/2 ton? On my 1/2 ton '48 the filler neck is on the passenger side. Did they switch sides between '47 and '48? That wouldn't seem to make sense, but who says it has to make sense...

Maybe somebody added an auxillary tank to that truck? Would like to see what the other side looks like!
