fuel pressure
Fresh break-in on a 283 with mild cam and intake, 500 c.f.m. edelbrock carb requiring no more than 6.0 p.s.i. The fuel pressure from the pump is registering 9 p.s.i. Is this going to cause flooding or excessive fuel to intake? Symptoms are surging r.p.m. up and down on idle
Plugs are black as coal no matter what my timing is at.

Re: fuel pressure
You need to install an inline pressure regulator. Don't take a chance of washing down the inside of your cylinders with gasoline and ruining your new motor.

Re: fuel pressure
Yes it will! as said regulate the fuel to 4to5 lbs max that way it will run when the needle seats in and still hold off the pressure. Also watch the edelbrock float level and always check for leaking floats. There is alot of leaking floats out there at least one of the two floats in the last 5 edelbrock carbs ive rebuilt have had a leaking float. This information is all pertaining to the afb style edelbrock not the quadrajet style.

Re: fuel pressure
Buy an Edelbrock fuel pump they're already regulated for their Carburetors.

Re: fuel pressure
I have a speedway motors regulator part 720-5857 adjusted at 4 lbs.has worked well but i'm sure the holley regulator part 427-12803 is a much better regulator for the long haul.

Re: fuel pressure
Insert paper filter between pump and carb, that lowered mine.
