Is This Normal?

I have no idea who manufactured these headers but I seriously doubt this is normal. I'm guessing the engine mount is shot which caused the header to rub against the frame rail. Wacha All think? I'm planning on pulling the engine and tranni this weekend.

Re: Is This Normal?

I'm guessing the headders were a poor design for the truck, not the first time that kind of interfearance has happened. but still it won't hurt to check the motor mounts while your at it.

I think I have a set just like that with the crease in them...they are hanging on my fence...LOL! Probably not made for trucks.

Re: Is This Normal?

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'm in the market for some new headers... but I'm still pulling the engine this weekend so I can dress it up and paint the block with por 15.

Re: Is This Normal?

Not uncommon to have to massage the headers even the ones made for our trucks. That crease looks like it was a result of a broken motor mount.

I tend to be leaning in that direction as well. The passenger side shows a clearence of about 1.5" so I'll know for sure by this weekend. Thanks for the input

Re: Is This Normal?

yeah the brand new flowtechs that i put on my 72 about 3 years ago hit the passenger side bracket that the motor mounts sit on. i ended up grinding some off the bracket to get it to fit

Re: Is This Normal?

My Doug Thorley Try Y headders clear the frame just fine on my 72 4X4, but they do hang down below the frame. I bought them around 95 and have not had one problem with them. admittedly tho this truck isn't allways a daily driver

I will add tho that i had to go to short plugs and heat insulation sleeves on the plug wires.

Re: Is This Normal?

I once put a camera under the hood to record engine sound... You'd be surprised at how much the engine moves around as the frame flexes over things, like curbs. My headers fit perfect when I 1st got it, started to notice dents in the #1 cylinder's tube when I pulled them to change header gaskets.. And then the sucker didn't want to go back in. Had to dent the header a bit to get it to clear fine.

Re: Is This Normal?

The v8 motors sit higher and back a bit more than on the 2 wheel drives which gives a little more room for the headers. but way less room for the distributor and cap...

LMAO!!!! Is that what the deal is?? Motor mounts are different??

I keep seeing other trucks with a wide body distributor, and in my 4X4 i had to sent it back and get a smaller mallory unit. Man that was a bit of frustration to have during a rebuild back around 95, i was lucky i was able to get her cleaned up enough to return it.

Re: Is This Normal?

Yes if you look at the first picture he is using the 2 wheel drive motor mount holes in the frame... (the front 2 holes) and on the 4 wheel drive you use taller mounts and the back 2 holes. You need to move the motor back and up to clear the front axle.

And thus the reason for the high hump right? starting to make a little more sense now.

Re: Is This Normal?

I'm really liking this thread. So far I've learned quite a bit about headers and various engine mounts. I would of never thought mount placing would determine where and how high the engine sits.

Re: Is This Normal?

Ok so finally got around to pulling the engine and it was indeed the motor mount that was broken. Now since I have the engine out might as well dress her up a bit.
