Free truck and a sawzall

So, what's the next step to make a chop top again?

We did that to make the front firewall and cowl area easy to move and store. Is easier than taking the cab totally off and tripping over for a long time.

For giggles I'd almost just wrap it up and send it to you! I'm guessing the wheel is so broke down it is nothing but a gooey icky mess. You can't even wear rubber gloves and touch it, or you have to remove the glove to get your hand back because the glove is stuck to the wheel forever!

Re: Free truck and a sawzall

Could not find a key that would get the ignition out of the lock position and could not bring myself to break the column. Otherwise, we might have tried to start it. Also it has no brakes (found out the hard way) so pushing it around the block with the 4 wheeler did not really sound like that good of an idea. But it did cross our minds to take it for a "spin" like that.

I want it out of my way by next weekend, gotta get what I want off of it and get it gooooooooone! Everything is soaking with pb blaster and my shiny new MAC 3/8 impact is ready for a workout tomorrow.

So this is what goes on at a body shop when you have a slow day?

No wonder it takes so long to get vehicles painted.

I guess I'm hoping there wasnt any way at all to get a title...if not I'd say you just ruined a good rebuildable truck.

Oh I could have title 42's it pretty easy actually. Then I'd just need a front bumper, core support, inner fenders, fenders, hood, latch, hood springs, engine, radiator, battery tray, battery, starter, left door, right door, left rocker, right rocker, drivers floor, seat, dash, steering wheel, right cab corner, left cab corner, bed and tailgate, new bumpers, probably all new suspension and a set of tires.

Other than that, perfectly rebuildable and could have been back on the road quickly.

Re: Free truck and a sawzall

Yup, and everything that is unique and worth saving, will be kept and preserved and reused, I promise. The truck as a whole though, just not worth doing anything with.
I was hoping the core support would be good as a whole, but it appears sometime in its life the battery exploded and ate away the inside of the fender, the wheelhouse, the battery tray and the bottom of the support. They had a block of wood in it for a battery tray! I'm still going to save the support, just in case. Not sure enough of it is missing to really matter a ton. Would just have to fab a piece of metal to make it connect to the wheel house along the bottom edge.

Biggest thing that has sucked so far in the dismantle process, is having to clear little trees and brush out of it as I go. Seems it has a ton of growth entangled with the metal. And wasps nests, lots and lots of wasp nests.

And, pb blaster ROCKS!!

Not to mention there are about a bazzilion of these trucks down here sitting in fields, pretty much wherever they died.

Re: Free truck and a sawzall

Just about got her stripped. About to run out of steam for the day. Truck was last tagged 12/2000, battery was dated 11/95, had a brand new set of tires on it with the little nubbies still there (flat and dry rotted now, won't hold air). Also has what looks to be brand new plugs and wires. Antifreeze was still very green too. We took one valve cover off (to make sure we didn't have some good heads we needed to save), was so-so in appearance under there. Not going to waste the time to take the intake off, don't even think I'll save the 2 barrel rochester carb on it, motor is locked up tiiiiiiiight.

Still gotta yank the dash guts, but that'll be a lot easier to do once we cut the cab in half and get it off the truck. I'll be able to set it up on sawhorses and have a much better angle for all that stuff.

Hope to get enough out of the scrap on this and my suburban to buy a stepside bed, if I can ever find one locally.

Comes down to a matter of how much money it would take, and what you'll get out of it when you're done. And as others stated, some must die so that others may live....it is the circle of (truck) life. I've sent my share of these squares to the grave myself. I feel differently about the older models, but not the squares....

I see perfectly fine old doors, or atleast one in the bed there...I guess thats gettign sold for scrap..since you said its no good.

If all a person can do is bolt stuff on or hack stuff off, then I suppose that would look impossible to fix. I'm not trying to be rude...just honest.

Course I'm new here, but I just never understand where people get off showing pictures of cutting up stuff on a forum about the vehicle they are cutting up for no good reason.

Course there may be quite a few out in fields, but with car crusher laws, and people doing this...there wont be for long.

I just dont like to condone, or crack jokes at this type of behavior, its not like you even cut up the truck to use it for anything, other than to destroy.

Man, you take your old rusty trucks serious. I would suggest making him An offer on the quality parts you see. (After becoming a subscribing member of course)

Beat up old squares can be had around here for a few hundred dollars. They're rusty "patina'd" too.

This is a parts truck he got to help his 73 project, Randy has already stated he is keeping the good parts to use on his truck.
You really need to either lighten up or keep your opinion to your self....but that is just my opinion

I've typed out 4 different responses. All of which would probably not end pretty.

Tell you what Dru, since you're a new person and all, I'll use my paid membership status here and offer you the truck "AS IS WHERE IS" for $200. I figure that'll be close to what I get for scrap once it's loaded down. Since you can tell by the photos, I will offer no more photos. Now the ball is in YOUR court to save this poor truck from a horrible death.

Ok guys, time to lighten things up a bit so we don't have to lock the thread.

What some of you may see as a waste of good sheet metal, members below the rust zone see as just another old truck. If I had the time I could collect rust free doors and beds for almost nothing around here. You guys in the salt zone would kill for what we consider common.

It's all about location, and what is abundant in your region.
