I have a 71 C-10; in a previous post I asked about engine work that I will be doing this winter. My concern is that I don't have power brakes. I want to convert my rear drums to disks eventually; I have disks up front. What is involved with adding a booster? Do I need to replace the master cylinder? Brake lines? Will the original calipers and wheel cylinders work? Where does the vacuum line attach? Thank you.

This tread kind of went dead on me; trying to revive it. I want to add a booster, but need to know what else I will have to replace. Calipers; wheel cylinders; master cylinder, etc. Thanks.

You will need to replace your present MC (which I assume is disc/drum) with a disc/disc MC. It is common to use Corvette MC for this or an aftermarket conversion MC. You do not have to run a booster, but if you want to, specify that you want the MC to be for power brakes or buy the aftermarket MC and booster as a package. You won't have to do anything to the front disc parts, but you MAY need to replace the proportioning valve.

Make your vacuum connection on the intake manifold or at the rear of the carb, wherever the PCV is connected now.

you need brackets to mount booster to the firewall/you need rod to go from brake pedel to booster//rod from booster to master cyl

My Question would be how do you seal up the hole that the rod goes thru? my rod is about 3/8in dia. the hole is a little over an inch im sure there has to be something to help seal it ?

There is a rubber boot that is sold for the firewall hole. There are also two different length booster brackets/zbar linkages that were used on these trucks. If I remember correctly, one set is a little shorter and works with the double diaphragm boosters (they are thicker and smaller in diameter) and the longer set works with the single diaphragm booster which is larger and thinner.

ManesTruckParts.com, one of the Board vendors has them under the "Brake Parts" section of their catalog for $4.95. It is called a "power brake boot". No part number listed.
