Leaking water from front of motor...

Ok, I went outside saturday morning and was leaking water from the front of my motor in my truck (350).

It had about 50% of the antifreeze it should have and it got down to 28-29* weatherman said...

Big puddle of green water under the truck after I let it drain.

The waterpump looked cracked so i pulled it off, well no crack, so i made some gaskets from gasket material tonite and put it back together made sure everything was tight..and filled it back up, IT STILL LEAKS So i opened the draincock and came back inside

Any ideas...Truck is about to go on craigslist lol its quite unreliable, I cant lie

Re: Leaking water from front of motor...

Did you check your hoses? Also did you look for drips or drops from where ot could be leaking? Did you check/replace the gasket thats on the back of the water pump? Its the impeller plate gasket. If you look at the back of the water pump and see the plate that has 6 bolts on it there is a gasket that goes there

Isn't there a "Bypass" hole in the stem, that will let water pass through if the Bearing is Bad?

Are your heater hoses tight? I also have had "new" rebuilt pumps fail.

Re: Leaking water from front of motor...

there is a weep hole behind the pully under the front of the pump where it will leak if the seals on the shaft have failed.

Note: The pump in the pic is a newer version. It is basically the same, only decent pic I could get right now.

Re: Leaking water from front of motor...

There is a hole in the water pump near the pully on the bottem side if it is comming out there you need a new water pump. The seal is out.

Yep. Also, did you use thread sealant on the water pump bolts, couple of them go through waterjacket. Just a thought.

Re: Leaking water from front of motor...

I had the same problem thought the back plate seal was bad so i pulled the pump off(in my apartment driveway and spilled antifreeze all over) and got a new seal kit for it and sealed it all up put it back on, and later that day i noticed it was still leaking and then went back to the parts store and they told me that the pump was bad so they got a new pump for me and it didnt look right and i told them that but the guy swore up and down it would work so i went back to my place and tore it all apart again and was just about to put the new pump on and sure enough i was right they gave me the wrong one so i returned it and the one i needed was out of stock and so i had to run around town trying to find a place that had the right one lol.

Sorry you had a bad experience with "Parts Guys" that have given you that opinion/ bad taste in your Mouth.
Being one of those "Parts Guys", (for 10 years, back in the 70's),
I prided myself on being Knowledgable and getting that part right the FIRST TIME.
Had no computers back then either.
Actually had to look the part up in a big "Bank" of Parts Books.
Then on top of that Laborus Task, I had to actually accept funds and COUNT BACK CHANGE, without having a Cash Register TELL ME how to do that!

Ah the good ol' days.....

I was one of those "Idiots behind a computer screen" for over 4 years at a couple of big box auto parts stores, lol. I had plenty of experience and knowledge and was retired so the low pay did not bother me since I just wanted something to do part time.

After working in retail for 8 years I just gave it up and decided to just take breaks and be happy, put the wife to work, lol.

Unfortunately no matter how knowledgeable the parts guy is other factors can cause having the wrong part in a box.

Packaged wrong at the manufacturer or the wrong one returned in a box by a repair shop are a couple.

The large box stores are not able to hire experienced help with the very low pay they offer so it is real important for the customer to be a part of the process to get the right parts, unfortunately.

When I am looking for parts for my old trucks I spend a little extra time researching on the computer at the big box store web-sites which helps some. Also I try to take the old parts with me to compare to the new parts to make sure things look right.

I do share your frustration with the "Idiots behind the computer screen" though, lol. I guess since I was one of "those guys" I try to be a little more patient when I go looking for parts.

Sorry I got off subject a little.

Re: Leaking water from front of motor...

I replaced the water pump on my '65, back "in the day" and found it to be leaking when I was refilling the radiator. It looked like it was coming from the back of the pump....and it was. So, off with it all and back to the parts store. It was a reman and opted to go to NAPA and get a new 'un.

The cover on the back of the pump is held on with bolts and may not be tightened, properly. I know now that I have to check those if I ever have to replace another pump, but a little fore-hand knowledge could save you a lotta work. Yeah, it's the responsibility of the reman guy to do that, but whose work is going to matter more at the time you're ready to fire it up?

Yes, I have pulled wrenches and I have worked the parts counter. Did I think to check that cover? Nope....never had one to leak before. But, now I'm wiser.

You sure are right, I always go with a new water pump instead of a remanufactured. I guess because I hate rework.

In this part of the country Napa and Fishers have good quality parts, followed by O'Rielly's and Auto Zone is dead last as far as I am concerned.
