Open Manifolds
Ok folks, I was just wondering if it is safe to run my truck with open exhaust manifolds for a little while until I get settled. There are no pipes connected to the exhaust manifolds or anything..will this ruin my truck? Is it safe to drive to someone's house 30 miles away? thanks folks

 I drove my '69 a while ago with open headers, 2 hrs later my ears were still buzzing

ive been driving my truck aroud the neighborhood with nothing but the manifolds, it hasn't hurt anything, but it is obnoxiously loud and wee bit of a fire hazard( just get under there and watch it at night!)

i have run em to the muff shop with no exhaust, but stick about a ft of pipe off ea manifold to get the "fireballs " out of the eng compartment. Make sure you dont have anything dripping that will burn! My guess would be that after 30mi........you probably will be temporarily deaf

You may want to rethink running open manifolds. Once you shut your engine off, relatively cool air will be drawn into the manifolds and may warp your exhaust valves. I have heard of this happening. If you must, at least run a short section of pipe as crazy longhorn suggests, it will serve to preheat any air entering the manifolds after you've shut it down, lessening the risk of valve warpage.

Yup, with the cold weather around the country it's a real good way to warp a valve. I would stick something on it, even if it's a $10.00 glass pack muffler. It's cheaper to do that then paying to get a valve job done

While it IS possable to warp a valve, and it DOES happen once in a while, in high school i drove an '81 Citation with nothing but a manifold for over 6 months. no dammage accured except to my ears.
The sound we all love and drool over is also a cop magnet. |

personally, i wouldnt run it unless it went at least as far as long headers... my headers end righ tbelow your feet, and i've been running it like that sinse last april. so far no problems.
i'd try to get it to the "bend" of the cab from the firewall to floorboard
